[VOTE] Apache Derby logo

This is a vote for choosing a logo for Apache Derby.

Rules of engagement:

- Please vote for one and only one logo.

- Respond to both derby-dev and derby-all and put an X to the logo of
your choice

- Please vote only once. Multiple votes by the same person will be
discarded.

- The vote will follow DB project guidelines at
http://db.apache.org/decisions.html. Anyone can cast a vote, but only
committers have binding votes.

- Only entries submitted to the JIRA item DERBY-297 will be considered.

- The list of logos is officially frozen to those on this ballot. Logos
added later will not be considered in the vote.

- If no logo has more than 50% of the votes, there will be a runoff vote
of the top three vote getters.

- Voting closes at 12:00 noon Pacific Standard Time (GMT-8) on
Wednesday, December 7

I know I'm tilting at windmills here, but I like the way #4 shows that
Derby is "The way Apache writes stuff down".

While you are at it, do you think you can upload some PNG versions of
the logo?

I think PNG is convenient for use on web sites, in presentations, etc.,
and we avoid the compression artifacts of JPEG (which people otherwise
might use if they try to convert from any of the other formats you listed).

OK, I will prepare them and put them up. I think tomorrow I can manage this.

I will put on it an AI, EPS, PSD, The fonts, A paper with colors, A
package with the tiny buttons

Please tell me other things you also need.

Roger,

I created DERBY-747 for this (

I just closed DERBY-297 to keep the logo contest itself separate from
final activity. :-)

I suggest creating a new Jira issue.

I'll offer to incorporate it into the web site, but I think the first
step is to get the sublines, etc. nailed down and final images in Jira.

Maybe you could upload them to DERBY-297 and then they could be
committed to the Derby site svn tree.

Thanks...

Are there ideas for any other sublines for Derby? Where should I upload
or place the source images?
And how should we put the new logo into the project, which steps are
great for the project?

Let me look into us using the term "Java". It may be that ASF needs to
get a license to the trademark, and then it needs to say "Java TM"
instead of just "Java".

Congratulations on winning.

Is it possible you could provide all the images shown in the showcase as
separate files?

And possibly the logo with text modified to not have the "Pure Java
Database" tag line? I think Sun Microsystems may have some issue with
using such a term, they protect the Java brand pretty fiercely. Unless
someone from Sun points out it is ok.

Thanks,

I agree with you. After all, what links an elephant with PostgreSql?
(I've got to say that whenever I see an elephant at the zoo now I think
of PostgreSql.)

btw, Roger, I really like the simple, elegant lines in the logo you
produced. Thanks for contributing it.

Re: [RESULT] [VOTE] Apache Derby logo

Posted by Roger Dudler <rd...@iframe.ch>.
Hi,

Thanks for voting for my submission. That's a great result for me. But
since I saw your posts about the hat and other kinds of things, I have
to say something to you.

I think the main thing is that I'm actually from Switzerland and my
english isn't that good and well: Derby ? What's this. So I think most
people who don't speak english fluent, don't really link this word with
a special thing like a hat or a horse race event or something other.

So, the goal for the logo would be, that people who look at the skin or
the logo of derby, can recognize: Ah, that one I know. Ok, they don't
really care about what the logo is, they only recognize: Ah, I saw this
one in combination with the word Derby. Mission complete...

The thing with the contest: Look, this content was launched in Spring
04, it took a couple of month to really start the contest and the full
process has or would take near 1 year. So, why don't you want a
decision? The corporate design of the derby project should be here.
Something should be here. Why spend another half year or full year to
decide for a *little* bit better solution, when there are options here.
Take this time to spread the word and the logo. That's the main thing.

For me it's not important, that my submission won. My goal is to help
the project itself. Maybe with ideas or prototypes or whatever. Take the
things you like and make the best with it.

[RESULT] [VOTE] Apache Derby logo

The polls are closed, and here are the vote results

Logo Number 10 has 67% of the votes and 67% of the binding votes, and
thus is the clear winner. Unless there are any significant objections
from committers, I'll go ahead and update the STATUS file to reflect
this decision.

RE: [VOTE] Apache Derby logo

Posted by Samer Kanjo <sa...@kanjo.net>.
IMHO: A derby is a hat and most people, I think, know that. I don't really
mind if the representation of the hat is technically a derby or technically
some other hat or a hybrid.

If you want to get technical based on the following link you provided...

http://www.villagehatshop.com/mens_fur_felt_wool_classics.html

Take a look at the 2 kinds of fedoras: Jaxon Diamond Crown Fedora and
Borsalino Beaver Fedora. The brim of the Jaxon looks more like a derby while
the other Fedoras do not. It looks to me like there is already confusion in
naming hats based on their physical attributes. If hat makers can't work it
out, who will?

Maybe I'm wrong, but #10 looks more like a fedora than a derby, which
might violate a Red Hat trademark. A derby has a distinct rigidity,
making it flat across the bottom, with a narrow brim rounded slightly
up all around, optionally higher on left and right than front and
back. Fedoras are less rigid. If #10 were more obviously a derby/
bowler, I'd vote for it.

My vote is for 10. Nice, clean, Escher-esque in the sense of not
quite possible but visually interesting.

My vote: "None of the above".

I do *not* think all the suggestions on the list are "crap" - as a
matter of fact a few of them have very good potential - but I support
the idea (brought forward by Brian Smith) of spending more time trying
to get more people with graphics skills involved in this process. I'd
rather do this than deciding on one logo now and go through the process
of changing to another logo later.

Announcing the logo competition to some graphics communities (if this
has not been tried already), perhaps giving them some pointers to some
of the symbolism we've seen so far (this may include the hat, the
feather, the horse, etc.), might be worth the effort.

However, I *do* think Derby needs a logo in the not so distant future,
and I will definitely be able to live with either of the logos having
received votes so far.

BTW:
I won't dig too deep into the hat discussion, but I certainly heard of
demolition derby long before I heard of the hat - but I guess that's
just me ;) Demolition is probably not a good theme to include in the logo,
though...

+1 on wait for more submissions.

Why:

1) Derby as a hat is for me US a phenomenom, I would call at a
bowler. (I never heard of Derby as a hat before I started working with
Derby. To me Derby was a town in England, a horse race, an english
football team or a football match (or any match) between two
neighboring teams as in "a local derby").

2) I agree that alternative 10 is too close to the red hat of RedHat.

3) I would really like to see some of the other alternatives worked
out with the same graphical quality as alt. 10

That said: Alternative 10 is *really* nice.....

It sounds like this is a vote for "none of the above" -- e.g. let's wait

No, a veto would be a -1 on something. :) I'm expressing my opinion (I
agree with Brian Smith). Perhaps it was confusing since this thread has
[VOTE] in the subject.

I have the feeling that the vote we are doing is on whether we want some
nice, professionally looking graphics versus some home-made crap. Well
of course we want the nice logo. But I think the vote is a bit too much
about presentation and too little about content. I'd like to see more
hi-res, anti-aliased, professionally looking logos before making a
decision. Keeping the Red Hat logo in mind, I'd say "enough with the
hats already". :) I think it's too similar, we'll look like "the Red Hat
database". Also, what people associate with the word Derby varies: A
soccer team, a city in England, horse racing, a hat, more?

But I don't object enough to veto the logo vote. ;)

I wonder if the Derby-hat is a United States' concept. I'm English but
live in the US, and I think I only heard about Derby hats over here.
But after living here so long, I get easily confused over what's US
English and what's British English.

Actually the idea for a logo has been kicking around for over a year. If
I remember right, the suggestion was made a couple months after Derby
started incubation. --I'll see if I can dig up that old post.

As is the way with many of these volunteer projects, energy goes up and
down depending on what else might be happening at the time. David had
the itch and energy to poke the idea alive -- and I'm glad he did.

It isn't a marketing decision. In my opinion, it's just plain fun.

Getting a logo from within the community makes it more special in my
opinion.

--Incidently, I think we have some excellent, professional, attractive
submissions. In fact, I'm having trouble choosing. Of course, it's

Take a look at the other Apache projects. Many have logos, though not all.

It isn't necessary -- some of us just think it would be nice.

I am not a committer. But, I am curious about why you don't have a "No Logo"
option or a "Wait for more submissions" option.

Firstly, I think that they name "Derby" is a reference to racing, which
implies that the product is fast. This is a good association. However, most
entries seem to be based on that fact that "derby" *could* also refer to a
type of hat that most people have absolutely no knowledge of. I don't see
how this allusion to obscure trivia is useful to the project. Besides that,
there are already major, successful open-source projects using hat logos
(Red Hat and Fedora). Therefore, I believe that the hat logos are all
fundamentally unhelpful, regardless of their impressive artistic merits.

Secondly, it seems like this logo idea was just conceived a very short time
ago. The next version of Derby won't be released for some time. I don't
understand why these kinds of marketing decisions cannot be deferred to a
time closer to the release date. Since there is no pressing need for a logo,
I think that it makes sense to wait for a really spectacular submission,
even if it doesn't happen immediately.

Thirdly, I think that you would get a much broader (and potentially better)
set of submissions if this was announced in forums that are oriented towards
graphic design. Just like I wouldn't ask the population of a woodworking
convention to design lingerie, I don't think it is a good idea to ask a
mailing list consisting almost exclusively of programmers to create artwork.

Finally, I don't understand why every project needs to have a logo in the
first place. Out of the following databases, how many of them have a logo
that made enough of an impression on you that you could sketch it: SQL
Server, DB2, Oracle, Firebird, PostgreSQL, MySQL, HSQL? Furthermore, none of
the API's that I use on a regular basis have any logo worth noting.

I see your point, but the vote is for a specific logo, not a theme. If
the winner was #1, that would be the logo, we would not be waiting
around for a better graphic.

If someone subsequently supplied a better looking graphic along the same
theme, then we could adopt it, but it would be another vote. (I think).

In fact it's exactly the same if some logo wins and someone subsequently
provides a great logo with a completely different theme, Derby could
switch to that new logo, again with a vote.

I don't believe the Apache feather should be a requirement, probably
about a third of apache project logos do not include the Apache feather,
in any form.

E.g. tomcat

http://tomcat.apache.org/images/tomcat.gif

I like the way Spam Assassin includes the feather,
it's actually incorporated into the deisgn, not just "dropped in".

http://spamassassin.apache.org/images/arrowlogo.png

I think it's amusing that the only(?) Apache project with the term
graphics in its name, has, in my view, the most "busy", awkward looking
logo. :-)

I agree with Jeremy and hence why I picked #1 submission - theme looks
nice...I'm NOT just looking at the graphics per-se (we all know the graphics
can be improved once a theme and design has been approved/voted)...A hat
without a feather (i.e. Apache) might be representing Derby but _not_
Apache Derby (I know am just scratching my itch here ;) but I wanted to
mention it...content is more important than visual at this state and it's my
own opinion...

I vote for none of the available choices. I think that it is a serious
issue that the use of the word Derby as a type of hat is limited to the
U.S.; that there is no immediate need for the logo; and that extending
the time to submit entries can provide more choice and quality.

BTW:
I won't dig too deep into the hat discussion, but I certainly heard of
demolition derby long before I heard of the hat - but I guess that's
just me ;) Demolition is probably not a good theme to include in the logo,
though...

Entry 10 is good, but the hat does not look like a Derby hat, hence

I vote for none of the above too, it will be nice to have more ideas
flowing. It was hard to not vote for 10 though.

very nice, I also would like to see more refinement of the ideas

I vote for none of the available choices. I think that it is a serious
issue that the use of the word Derby as a type of hat is limited to the
U.S.; that there is no immediate need for the logo; and that extending
the time to submit entries can provide more choice and quality.
