All levels of make fail on compiler error: -rdist unknown option.
Temporary fix: replaced all instances of -rdist with -L in every Makefile in 
source tree and compiled Apache successfully.

Try compiling Apache 1.3.9 on a RedHat 6.0/1 system.

Have configure recognized gcc version and change Makefiles appropriately.
