Review comment:
       Agreed regarding uncertainty. It would be great if the changes from `arrow2` were available since I think they may also make some of the reasons I need this change unnecessary. It seems like any change that replaces `Buffer` would probably (I think) be a major revision. Such a major revision could remove this API if it weren't necessary anymore.
