Hey all,

I'd love to help diagnose the situation, but I'll need more info:

- architecture
- did you compile xerces-c from source or are you using the binary
- gcc version
- what's the problem? Run time problem or compile problem?

Cheers,
jas.

BTW, after removing the old libxerces, did you relink? This will make
a difference.

BTW, that error, the can't find _6XMLUni... is what I get when I
remove my libxerces.so from it's location and perl can't find it.

You may try setting explicitly setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the location
of libxerces before running make test...

Just some ideas.

I don't really know what to say. I hate loader problems, because they
never seem to make any sense.

Just for kicks, run 'nm' on your libxerces and grep for the undefined
symbol - it ought to be there - if it isn't there's a stranger
problem.

Anyone else got some ideas?

Thanks for catching that David, it's one more reason that makes me
think that relinking Xerces.so with the correct libxerces might solve
the problem.

Erwin,

In your previous mail, ldd reports that it finds
/root/Xerces/xerces-c-src1_7_0/lib/libxerces-c1_7_0.so.  But you say
you put it into /usr/lib? Are you sure you're getting the right one?

There was a version of libxerces-c1_4.so installed (by SuSE). I removed
it and reran ldconfig and it still throws that error. However, even
before that the "ldd Xerces.so" indicated it was using the 1.7 version
(attached to my previous Email). Where would I have to set/extend the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH? ldd Xerces.so finds all the libraries and ldconfig
cached the libxerces 1.7 (which I placed into /usr/lib)

That's a loader error, you've got an unresolved symbol. Possibly
because LD_LIBRARY_PATH isn't set??? I hate loader problems.

I don't suppose you have multiple versions of libxerces around do you?

Compile works fine but when the "make test" or a perl program reaches
"require XML::Xerces;" following error is thrown:

Can't load 'blib/arch/auto/XML/Xerces/Xerces.so' for module XML::Xerces:
blib/arch/auto/XML/Xerces/Xerces.so: undefined symbol:

Let me know if you need more information.

David,

you where (almost) right on the spot. While I made sure that everything
was using gcc 2.95.3 to compile, apparently somewhere during
compilation, the gcc 3 libraries, left from an "unauthorized"
installation of gcc 3.01 in /usr/local, where used instead. We removed
all traces of gcc 3 and _finally_ got rid of the error. I should have
read the ldd output more carefully - I never considered that it would
preferentially use the gcc 3 libraries when everything else appeared to
be using 2.95.

Thanks a lot for all your help - I have really appreciated all of your
input.

Erwin

Erwin,

The fact that Xerces.so is pulling in libgcc_s.so.1 suggests to me
that you are building with gcc-3.x. Can you check this? I ask
because previously you had reported gcc-2.95.3, perhaps when
describing the Xerces C++ build. I think these need to be the same
when dealing with C++ libraries.

Regards,
David

At first glance, these are not identical symbols. This bolsters my
suspicion that the Perl module build is seeing something different
header-wise.

First off all, thanks a lot all to you guys - even though we haven't
resolved the issue yet you have been extremly helpful. Sorry for not
replying earlier; I spend most if the day investigating a possible
network intrusion by a cracker (luckily, as it turned out someone was
just sloppy).

Anyway, I tried placing the includes and libraries into the /usr/lib and
/usr/include, point $XERCESCROOT to /usr and after making sure any
traces of the previous libxerces were removed extracted the XML-Xerces
tarball again and recompiled it. make test still fails with the same
error message. Xerces.so now points to the libxereces-c1_7_0.so in
/usr/lib:
twist:~/Xerces/XML-Xerces-1.7.0-1 # ldd
blib/arch/auto/XML/Xerces/Xerces.so
        libpthread.so.0 => /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x400d7000)
        libxerces-c1_7_0.so => /usr/lib/libxerces-c1_7_0.so (0x400ee000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x4036a000)
        libstdc++.so.3 => /usr/local/lib/libstdc++.so.3 (0x40498000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0x40530000)
        libgcc_s.so.1 => /usr/local/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x4054f000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x2aaaa000)

Following the output of nm on Xerces.so and libxerces.so:

twist:~/Xerces/XML-Xerces-1.7.0-1 # nm
blib/arch/auto/XML/Xerces/Xerces.so | grep fgNullPointerException_Name
         U _6XMLUni.fgNullPointerException_Name
twist:~/Xerces/XML-Xerces-1.7.0-1 # nm -C
blib/arch/auto/XML/Xerces/Xerces.so | grep fgNullPointerException_Name
         U XMLUni::fgNullPointerException_Name
twist:~/Xerces/XML-Xerces-1.7.0-1 # nm /usr/lib/libxerces-c1_7_0.so |
grep fgNullPointerException_Name
001ce0e0 R _ZN6XMLUni27fgNullPointerException_NameE
twist:~/Xerces/XML-Xerces-1.7.0-1 # nm -C /usr/lib/libxerces-c1_7_0.so |
grep fgNullPointerException_Name
001ce0e0 R XMLUni::fgNullPointerException_Name

While I'm a proficient programmer, I don't know the dynamic loading
mechanism from within perl well enough to be able to do any serious
debugging. Any more ideas?

Erwin

Good idea, Steve. I don't think this is the case in this situation,
becuase the symbol is a global variable in the XMLUni class:

~/work/xml-xerces/perl $ nm -C blib/arch/auto/XML/Xerces/Xerces.so| grep fgNullPointerException_Name
         U XMLUni::fgNullPointerException_Name
0008881c t _wrap_val_XMLUni_fgNullPointerException_Name(sv *, magic *)

~/work/xml-xerces/perl $ nm blib/arch/auto/XML/Xerces/Xerces.so| grep fgNullPointerException_Name
         U _6XMLUni.fgNullPointerException_Name
0008881c t _wrap_val_XMLUni_fgNullPointerException_Name__FP2svP5magic

~/work/xml-xerces/perl $ nm $XERCESCROOT/lib/libxerces-c.so.20.0 | grep fgNullPointerException_Name
00432404 D _6XMLUni.fgNullPointerException_Name

~/work/xml-xerces/perl $ nm -C $XERCESCROOT/lib/libxerces-c.so.20.0 | grep fgNullPointerException_Name
00432404 D XMLUni::fgNullPointerException_Name

This error is what I get if DynaLoader.pm can't actually locate
libxerces.so

jas.

What does the missing symbol demangle to? I've seen numerous cases where
the library and client get built with different notions of parameter size,
type, etc. It's worthwhile (assuming the base name of the routine is
present) to demangle both references and see if they jive.
