wanting to summarize FOP installation/configuration
i want to write a short doc to help some colleagues set up
FOP on their systems, and i just wanted to clarify the minimal
set of .jar files one needed to install, and their function.
given the current binary download of FOP, and its component
.jar files, here's my understanding:
build/fop.jar: pretty much can't live wthout this
lib/batik.jar: for SVG graphics. no need to install this if
you've already installed batik independently
lib/xalan-x.y.z.jar: no need for this if you're running
a fairly recent version of java, since xalan comes bundled
these days. (and certainly no need to install this if you
already have an XSLT processor to generate the .fo file
in the first place)
lib/xml-apis.jar: if you're using the built-in xalan, do you
still need to install this? (obviously, you don't need this
if you don't plan on using xalan at all. or do you? is this
.jar file used for anything else?)
lib/ant-x.y.z.jar: don't see any need for this if we're installing
from the binary and don't plan on building anything
lib/xercesImpl.jar: this has to be installed, but might already
be there from an independent intallation of xerces
lib/avalon-framework-cvs.jar: i have no clue what this is for.
although i recall that it's required.
in addition to all of the above, there are also the imaging libs
from sun: JAI and JIMI. from what i've read, JAI is the newer
product so, if it supports what you want, just go with JAI.
plan B is to use JIMI.
is all of the above approximately correct? thanks.

ok, so based on j. pietschmann's information,
1) if one is going to use SVG, one should prefer whatever version
of batik that comes with their version of FOP, for synchronization
reasons.
2) as long as one is using a fairly recent verion of java (and
by "fairly recent", i mean 1.4.2, which is what i use), the
incorporated xalan should be fine. otherwise, get a more
recent version of xalan and set it up as "endorsed".
3) the xercesImpl.jar file is essential -- this is what FOP
uses to parse the .fo file, is that right?
4) if one is already generating their .fo with, say, saxon or
xsltproc, there's no need for xalan in the first place.
(i did note that, by default, if one uses FOP to convert
directly from XML, FOP just uses xalan for that first step,
anyway. so, other than that, there's no need for xalan to
begin with.)
5) lib/xml-apis.jar: so, if i read this correctly, you need this
.jar file regardless of whether you're using xalan or not, yes?
6) avalon-framework-cvs.jar: essential.

i remember a good deal of this from our previous animated discussion :-),
i was just wondering about the development streams of these two products.
is JAI slated to eventually replace JIMI? just curious.

Not necessarily true. Many releases of FOP came with a CVS build
of Batik because of unsynced release cycles. This may happen again.

May be bad advice too, up to 1.4.1_01 the Xalan bundled with
the JDK had annoying bugs.

This one is easier: no need if JDK 1.4 or another JAXP 1.1
compliant parser/XSLT processor is installed.

Yes, it contains the parser and DOM APIs as well. You need at
least the org.xml.sax.* parser APIs.

It is required. Look at avalon.apache.org for more info.

JAI is faster because of native libraries, but Jimi is more portable
and easier to install (less side effects). There are a few formats
wich are currently only supported with Jimi and vice versa, see
the FOP doc (graphics) for details.
