The Apache Conferences, hosted round the world, are the main get-togethers of all the developers of Apache applications. That includes not just the Hadoop developers and users, but many of the people who work on the rest of the Java technologies on which Hadoop is built.

They are well worth attending for this reason. Usually the day before the main conference is a "Hackathon", in which people can bring their laptops and work on joint projects; in Hadoop, that means fixing problems.
