managing announcements in the new federation
one topic that i don't think is covered in the federation proposal
(http://nagoya.apache.org/wiki/apachewiki.cgi?XMLProjectPages/
FederationProposal) is how announcements are going to be handled under
the new structure.
is there going to be an announcements list for each new TLP or will
each TLP continue to use the communal announcements list?

[ANNOUNCE] XMLOpen 2004 Conference
Posted by Eamonn Neylon <en...@manifestsolutions.com>.
Announcing the XMLOpen Conference 2004
XMLOpen is a new event, for practitioners of both XML and open source
technologies. It will provide a forum for exploring how to successfully
combine software acumen with the skills needed to use XML and deploy open
source software. The conference organizers are now taking submissions for
conference presentations and are actively soliciting speakers for this two
and a half day event to be held in Cambridge, UK from 21-23 September, 2004
at the Cambridge Computing Laboratory, Cambridge, UK.
Supported by O'Reilly UK Ltd and XML:UK, XMLOpen is an event for software
developers, standards developers, technology managers and other technical
specialists to exchange ideas, methods, experiences and advances related to
XML and open source technologies. The conference will include workshops,
presentations, and practical problem solving opportunities in twin-track and
plenary conference sessions. The presentations will cover techniques common
to open source XML projects and will include choices in development,
application development best practice, selection and use of platforms and
frameworks, issues in releasing software, licensing implications, etc.
For more information on how to get involved with XMLOpen, visit

It's not available on viewCVS but it's there indeed, just cvs -d
youruser@cvs.apache.org:/home/cvs co committers and you should be able
to get it.

Yes, I think that Rodent created such a system for statistics.
Very nice it is/was.
You, committers, can see how to retrieve statistics results
via committers module. (/committers/docs/mailinglist-tips.txt)
I guess Rodent has transition data of the subscribers on XX-list ..
... not sure.

hopefully, the newsletter's death will not have been in vain if it
becomes a useful lesson for more important changes in the days ahead.
creating the newsletter was a lot of work. it only took a dozen or so
objectors (at the ASF level) to kill it. when the newsletter was
produced by jakarta, there were few dissenters and many grateful
voices. we tried to keep the same (successful) production methods at an
ASF level but there were too few people willing to defend the
newsletter or put energy in to make it work - fewer than when it was
produced by jakarta - and too many who thought that it should be done
differently or objected to the entire idea.
it takes a lot of energy to get an idea off the ground. moving an idea
from project level to ASF level appears to involve a different scale of
expenditure than working with a smaller community. (think for example,
about jakarta-commons-sandbox verses incubator.) unless care is taken,
there won't be enough energy for the ideas to survive the change. so,
there's a real risk that what good about the umbrellas will be lost.

I like the aggregator idea and I think we are going to have a few issues
like this. It's still not really clear how much is going to remain
shared and how much will be re-created under new TLP names, so I think
we will have to play by ear a bit.
It's going to be an interesting exercise :>.

Re: managing announcements in the new federation

hi berin
having a dozen or so announcement lists is going make it harder to keep
track of all new xml releases now and so make sure that they get fed
into the general infosphere (by way of the jakarta news section which
is now aggregated reasonably widely) but it's not such a big problem if
they were all to be created straight away. (what'd make it more
difficult is if projects started out by using announcements at xml and
then switched to use their own announcement lists without making an
announcement.)
what's more important is that there are people out there who are
relying on the announcements list to find out about new releases of
apache xml product. i have a feeling that someone produced some stats
about this when the posting-newsletters-to-announcement flame was
burning the apache newsletter (nee jakarta newsletter) to death. i
recall that the figures were larger than i'd expected. maybe it'd be a
good idea to either make announcements at xml into an aggrogater for
announcements within the federation (subscribe all announcement lists
in the federation) or close it down altogether (cleaner and let's
people know they need to subscribe to the announcement lists of those
projects they are interested in).
of course, this is just my tuppence...

Robert,
Might even be a bit of both. My own feeling is that each TLP will make
its own choice as to how much of its own infrastructure it sets up, but
the xml lists etc. are there for "sharing" between XML related projects.
So even if a TLP sets up its own announcements@, it could still post
to the announcements@xml.
Cheers,
Berin
