[jira] Created: (HIVE-777) CREATE TABLE with STRUCT type
CREATE TABLE with STRUCT type
-----------------------------
Key: HIVE-777
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-777
Project: Hadoop Hive
Issue Type: New Feature
Components: Query Processor
Reporter: Zheng Shao
Currently we only support map/array in type definition.
We should support STRUCT as well.
{code}
CREATE TABLE abc (
pageid INT,
ads STRUCT<adid:INT,location:STRING>,
userid: INT
);

He Yongqiang commented on HIVE-777:
-----------------------------------
I just realized that in this case 'null' is correct.
There is an example to show why:
hive> create table abc(strct struct<a:int, b:string>, value string);
OK
Time taken: 0.502 seconds
hive> load data local inpath '/Users/char/Documents/workspace/Hive-Clean/data/files/kv1.txt' overwrite into table abc;
hive> select * from abc limit 10;
Output:
{"a":238,"b":null} val_238
{"a":86,"b":null} val_86
{"a":311,"b":null} val_311
{"a":27,"b":null} val_27
{"a":165,"b":null} val_165
{"a":409,"b":null} val_409
{"a":255,"b":null} val_255
{"a":278,"b":null} val_278
{"a":98,"b":null} val_98
{"a":484,"b":null} val_484
We need to find a way to assemble struct data,

Zheng Shao commented on HIVE-777:
---------------------------------
@hive-777-2009-8-29.patch: Shall we support "STRUCT<adid:INT,location:STRING>" or "STRUCT<adid INT,location STRING>"?
The first one is consistent with the internal way of representing types, while the second one looks more like "create type", but "struct<...>" syntax is from internal type representation as well as "array<...>" and "map<...>".
I am biased towards the first one.

Talked with Yongqiang offline. For now we will support struct<name:type,name2:type2> first.
We don't want to loosen the grammar now because that will make it harder to extend Hive grammar in the future.
Yongqiang, for your test, can you do LIMIT 10 just to limit the size of output file size?
You might want to do "SELECT strct, strct.a, strct.b FROM xxx LIMIT 10" to have a more complete test.

but GROUP BY on a struct field is not supported now. (see following msg)
is there a plan to support this?

We can easily support both. User can either use SPACE or : as the delimiter of column name and column type.
For example:
create table abc (ads:struct<adid:int, loc:string>);
create table abc (ads:struct<adid int, loc string>);
create table abc (ads struct<adid:int, loc:string>);
create table abc (ads struct<adid int, loc string>);
are all correct.

---------------------------------
Do we want to support this ? or go the other route of first creating a type:
for eg:
create type addata (adid int, location string);
CREATE TABLE abc (
pageid INT,
ads addata,
userid INT
);
That way the same type can be used across multiple tables - you can select from one and insert into another etc.
Type will be a first class citizen, it can be passed to udfs, can be described etc.

---------------------------------
Yes, I think we should support both.
"Create type" will involve some metastore changes and more discussions. We won't be able to finish it in a short time.
This change is much smaller, and the syntax is consistent with the current syntax of "array<type>" and "map<type,type>".
Some users are already asking for it. I think we can get this one in first.
I will open a JIRA for "create type".
