Logging Levels of OpenEJB in Apache TomEE
Hi,
How can I set the logging levels of OpenEJB components running inside
TomEE? I want to see the debug-level logging statements for instance
from the source code of org.apache.openejb.config.AutoConfig.
I tried modifying conf/logging.properties and adding a
logging.properties file in WEB-INF\classes of my WAR but I can't find
the right combination and I'm not even sure these are the right files to
modify/create.
Thanks!
Bertrand

+1 thanks for the feedback
(for info that's done in catalina.sh)

Another trick if you want a little more control over the formatting of the
default logger.
In the Javadocs of SimpleFormatter (
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/util/logging/SimpleFormatter.html
link )
Set the property java.util.logging.SimpleFormatter.format on the startup
script with the format you want. For example, everything in one line:
-Djava.util.logging.SimpleFormatter.format="[%1$tF %1$tT|%4$s]%2$s:
%5$s%6$s%n"

It turns out that startup.bat sets some environment variables necessary
for proper logging operation which is not done when starting the server
from Eclipse.
The following properties must be added to the server lauch configuration:
-Djava.util.logging.config.file="<put catalina.base path
here>/conf/logging.properties"
-Djava.util.logging.manager=org.apache.juli.ClassLoaderLogManager
Source:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/WTP_Tomcat_FAQ#How_do_I_enable_the_JULI_logging_in_a_Tomcat_5.5_Server_instance.3F
Perhaps this should be added to a new "logging" section of the
documentation?

Re: Logging Levels of OpenEJB in Apache TomEE

I followed the first method from
http://openejb.apache.org/tomee-and-eclipse.html
So I have 'Use Tomcat installation' in the server overview page. When I
added the Tomcat 7 server in Eclipse, a new "Servers" project was
automatically created for me which contains configuration files
(catalina.policy, context.xml, server.xml, etc.) Does that answer your
question?
Prior to using TomEE, I used Glassfish. With Glassfish servers, Eclipse
didn't create a server project so this is a first for me. I'd rather
have Eclipse only issue start, stop and start in debug commands and
deploy apps to an existing TomEE installation without overriding
anything but I don't know if that's possible.

yep (for autoconfig)
in eclipse it probably depends on your settings, do you use in place
configuration files or Servers project?

Re: Logging Levels of OpenEJB in Apache TomEE

It turns out both of your answers work great when starting TomEE with
the bin/ scripts!
However, it doesn't work when starting the server from Eclipse. In that
case, only INFO level statements and up are displayed. Any idea why that is?
As for autoconfig not being called in your test, I think you need to use
JPA and have a persistence.xml for it to be called.

maybe autoconfig is not called (was the case during my test ;))
you can try OpenEJB.level=FINE
well we don't use qualified name for logging (for several reason, there is
a thread discussion about it but that's the current status).
our log names arein
http://grepcode.com/file_/repo1.maven.org/maven2/org.apache.openejb/openejb-core/4.0.0-beta-2/org/apache/openejb/util/LogCategory.java/?v=source
Typically it starts with OpenEJB
Framework we use often use the qualified name (cxf for instance)
...hope it helps

Hi Romain,
I tried adding
OpenEJB.startup.config.level=FINE
and then
OpenEJB.startup.config.level=FINEST
at the end of a stock conf/logging.properties but couldn't see any more
output in the console.
I'm a bit confused by which format to use in this file since the other
lines already present in the file use fully qualified class names like
org.apache.jasper.compiler.TldLocationsCache.level.

Hi,
add:
OpenEJB.startup.config.level=FINE
to conf/logging.properties
