Turbine vs. Expresso?

Hi,
I'm trying to get started with turbine. I'm also looking at Expresso. Is
there anyone who can give me some hints what to use for a small
community site? I would do the programming and another guy will make the
layout/content. Is turbine/velocity better separated and easier to start
with?
