[jira] [Commented] (INFRA-12686) lists.apache.org - issue with short Permalinks as originally published

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-12686?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=15540397#comment-15540397 ]

Sebb commented on INFRA-12686:
------------------------------

An example of the problem.
There are messages on derby-dev [1] and infrastructure issues [2] with the same prefix.
They both result in the shortened URL:

https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/Z7qd2pd84pll5sl

In this case, the problem was compounded by the MID generator setting.
At the time, this only included the body contents in the hash; thus any mails sent to multiple lists would have the same short link, regardless of when or where they were sent.

> When lists.a.o was originally configured, it was set to show shortened Permalinks in the GUI.
> These worked by truncating the internal message ID (MID) to 18 characters and then re-encoding as base 36.
> Obviously that means it's not possible to recover the original MID, so it's not possible to guarantee that the original message can be recovered. There may be several messages that match the same prefix. However in this case, PonyMail currently returns the first match, which may not be the correct one. There's no indication whether other MIDs might match.
> The configuration of lists.a.o was changed fairly early on to disable the short links.
> However there was a period of several weeks when the short links were published. Unfortunately any such links are likely to be broken.
