[jira] [Commented] (ARROW-14068) [R] Better handling of calling
string functions on dictionaries

David Li commented on ARROW-14068:
----------------------------------
Oh, interesting. We could dictionary-decode in C++ but ideally we should operate on the dictionary itself if possible.

> Key: ARROW-14068

> Project: Apache Arrow

> Components: R
> Reporter: Nicola Crane
> Priority: Major
>
> When working with R tables that have factor columns and then have been converted into Arrow Tables, it's not pretty when we try to call string functions on those columns (which are now dictionaries)
> {code:java}
> Table$create(iris) %>%
> mutate(x = str_to_lower(Species))
> ## Error: NotImplemented: Function utf8_lower has no kernel matching input types (array[dictionary<values=string, indices=int8, ordered=0>])
> {code}
