User parameters

Hello,
  Iam very much new to Jmeter, Iam working on a case
where according to the value entered in a textbox on
the first jsp page ,corresponding text to that value
has to be displayed on second jsp. As 'HTTP user
parameter modifier' is deprecated Iam planning to use
'User parameters'.But here it will assign values to
variable specific to the thread.

Here is my case:
 In first jsp there is a textbox name
'Category',according to the entered category id, in
second page it has to display category information.

Plz help me where to specify these variables.
