If I may voice my two cents as former measurement taker migrated to tester:
I think Apache benefits from having a simple test tool in the distribution
and ab fits that need. Use of ab for simple tests does not typically require
quantifiable results so for this purpose, version numbers do not need to be
clearly defined. 

I would be very sad to see ab leave the httpd distribution.
