[users@httpd] HTACCESS FIle - Solved.
Hi,
Dont ask me how it happened, because I tried everything
short of black magic...ummm wait...ooooops! what's this
jar of eye of newt doing here...? Ok...so I tried black magic.
No matter, all is well. I don't know how it happened...I really
don't. But the folder now has authentication. Yipppeee.
Thanks to everyone that responded.

It's easy: Do exactly what you are doing now, but delete the <Limit ...>
and </Limit> lines. In other words, place the require/allow/deny
statements directly in the .htaccess file or directly in the <Directory>
section in httpd.conf without a <Limit> block around them.

Ok, I looked at the documentation (see below). I see how LIMIT can allow DELETE and all the other methods.. but since I don't know/do Apache black magic, can you suggest how one can get around using "<LIMIT Get>" for basic authentication?
Also how can one get around using "<Limit GET POST>/order allow,deny/allow from all/deny from x.x.x.x</limit>" to do IP address blocking?
Thanks,
-Hank
-------------
Access controls are normally effective for all access methods, and this is the usual desired behavior. In the general case, access control directives should not be placed within a <limit> section.
The purpose of the <Limit> directive is to restrict the effect of the access controls to the nominated HTTP methods. For all other methods, the access restrictions that are enclosed in the <Limit> bracket will have no effect. The following example applies the access control only to the methods POST, PUT, and DELETE, leaving all other methods unprotected:
<Limit POST PUT DELETE>
Require valid-user
</Limit>
The method names listed can be one or more of: GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, CONNECT, OPTIONS, TRACE, PATCH, PROPFIND, PROPPATCH, MKCOL, COPY, MOVE, LOCK, and UNLOCK. The method name is case-sensitive. If GET is used it will also restrict HEAD requests.

Until some funny guy comes over and deletes all your documents through the
web server.
See the documentation for the <Limit> directive to find out why you really
don't want to be using it.

Here's what works for me:
AuthUserFile <path to .htpasswd file made with htpasswd>
AuthName "please login"
AuthType Basic
<Limit GET>
require valid-user
</Limit>

Dear all,
I've been following this thread, because I have the same problem. I used
the Apache 2.0 documentation on how to set it up. It's not working for
me either, and I refuse to do black magic. Who knows what might happen
then ;-)
I hoped that a reasonable explanation would turn up.
In the .htaccess file in the folder I have:
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Password required"
AuthUserFile /usr/local/htpasswords
Require user validuser
I don't have a <Directory /Directory> for this directory, because I
think I don't need to.
Yes, the htpasswords file is there because I use it from the httpd.conf
for another directory entry. Yes, the user exists.
Any idea?
Much thanks,
Jeroen
