[Bug 119390] New: 'Select JRE' fails in modal loop -- no way out

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=119390

          Priority: P3
            Bug ID: 119390
          Assignee: ooo-issues@incubator.apache.org
Summary: 'Select JRE' fails in modal loop -- no way out
          Severity: normal
        Issue Type: DEFECT
    Classification: Application
                OS: Windows XP
          Reporter: seybernetx@yahoo.com
          Hardware: PC
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
           Version: OOo 3.4 Beta
         Component: configuration
           Product: word processor

Created attachment 77570
  --> https://issues.apache.org/ooo/attachment.cgi?id=77570&action=edit
Example, just for the record.

The first (and so far, LAST) time I tried to use the new 3.4 OpenOffice, I got
an error popup "Select JRE", with instructions how to select the Java runtime
environ. The problem is the pop-up is modal, which means I can't actually do
anything anywhere else in the window. Closing the popup just loops and popups
up again.

PS: So far as I know, the 3.4 version I'm using is a 'production' release, but
the only option I found in the version list was 3.4Beta (?).

--- Comment #5 from orcmid <or...@apache.org> ---
The case arrises when launching from a document. (In the screen capture, it
was an .rtf.) If the first run is by launching the main application
(soffice.exe), then selecting a JRE is available.

That's the workaround.

ADDENDUM: A few things more things that might matter.

I've been using Open Office for several versions -- since 3.1 at least. This
is the first new version I've downloaded & used since Apache merged/consumed
OpOf.

I tried starting OpOf without a document, per orcmid, and was able to select a
JAVA environment. Things seem to be working after that, in a couple quick
tests.

Hmm. Do you have the same problem if you open soffice directly rather than
attempt to launch a document? This might get you through first-use setup in a
better way.

[Not a fix, but it might provide a workaround for folks until the fix is in.]

Corrected Product Version. [We really need to prune that list, perhaps as part
of reviewing and retargetting old issues that are remain unresolved/unconfirmed
and plausible. They might all go into a AOO34-still bucket or OOo330-still
bucket.]

My complements to orcmid for his(?) quick reply.

In my experience, the typical response to bug reports from the great unwashed
is to run tests until they find a way that runs, than mark the bug "Unable to
reproduce". It is nice to know there is at least one person around here that
doesn't work that way.
