Configuration</a> component has been promoted out of the sandbox and into the Commons proper.

This code has been around and in use for quite a while, and a 1.0 release
is in progress. Configuration is curently used by the Jakarta

The POI Team is proud to announce the immediate availability of the Jakarta POI 2.0 Release Candidate 1. This is expected to be the final milestone on the way to the 2.0 production release.

<b>WHAT IS POI?:</b>
</p>
<p>
The POI project consists of APIs for manipulating various file formats based upon Microsoft's OLE 2 Compound Document format using pure Java. In short, you can read and write MS Excel files using Java. Reading property information is also supported. Work continues on reading and writing the MS Word format.

The Jakarta Commons team is pleased to announce the release of version 1.1 of
the Jakarta Commons DBCP component.

<a href="http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/dbcp/">Commons-DBCP</a>
provides database connection pooling services.
Together with Commons-Pool it is the default JNDI datasource provider for Tomcat.
</p>
<p>There were a lot changes since the 1.0 release on 12 Aug 2002.</p>
<ul>
<li>
All existing features can now be configured by JNDI Context providers (Tomcat).
</li>
<li>
The double close() of a pooled connection is more effectively blocked.
</li>
<li>
Prepared statement pooling is now implemented in BasicDataSource.
</li>
<li>
Access to the underlying connection is blocked by default.
</li>
<li>
New minIdle parameter for a minimum number of idle connections ready for use.
</li>
<li>
New connection default properties: defaultCatalog & defaultTransactionIsolation.
</li>
<li>
Missing driverClassName will now give the following error "No suitable driver".
</li>
<li>
Bad validationQuery will produce a meaningful SQLException.
</li>
<li>
UML Class & sequence diagrams, configuration documentation.
</li>
<li>
This release contains bug fixes to all known issues.

The Jakarta Commons team is pleased to announce the release of version 1.1 of
the Jakarta Commons Pool component.
</p>
<p>
<a href="http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/pool/">Commons-Pool</a>
provides a generic object pooling interface, a toolkit for
creating modular object pools, and several general purpose pool implementations.
</p>
<p>There were a lot changes since the 1.0.1 release on 12 Aug 2002.</p>
<ul>
<li>
A lot of corner cases were fixed.
</li>
<li>
Performance improvement by optimizing pool synchronization,
the critical code paths were optimized by reducing pool synchronization
but we also added more synchronization where needed.
</li>
<li>
New minIdle feature: the minimum number of objects allowed in the pool
before the evictor thread (if active) spawns new objects.
(Note no objects are created when: numActive + numIdle >= maxActive)
</li>
<li>
New maxTotal feature: a cap on the total number of instances controlled by a pool.
Only for GenericKeyedObjectPool where maxActive is a cap on the number of active
instances from the pool (per key).
</li>
<li>
UML Class & sequence diagrams.
</li>
<li>
This release contains bug fixes to all known issues.

The Tomcat team is pleased to announce the release of version 1.2.5 of the Apache
Tomcat mod_jk web server connector.
</p>
<p>
Tomcat is the reference implementation of a web application server which implements
the Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages specifications.
</p>
<p>
mod_jk is a connector which allows a web server such as Apache HTTPD or IIS to act as a
front end to the Tomcat web application server.
</p>
<p>
This version fixes a number of minor bugs.
</p>

<a href="http://jakarta.apache.org/tapestry/">Tapestry</a> release 3.0-beta-3 is now available. This is a
bug fix release; notably, the bugs in the Workbench and Vlib demos have been fixed, as well as the
problems generating dynamic JavaScript (which most often affected the Palette component).
</p>
<p>
Work in the near future will address the remaining known bugs, fill some small gaps in the code coverage
test suite, and fill some sizable gaps in the documentation set, prior to a release candidate.
</p>
<p>
In addition, the Tapestry project has recently added three new committers: Harish Krishnaswamy,
Tsvetelin Saykov and Erik Hatcher.

<li>Turbine 2.3 can load and use Avalon Components with the Avalon Service</li>
<li>The Templating engine at the core of Turbine has been completely overhauled and is now much more flexible and stable. However, this comes at the price that using "/" for template separators is no longer possible (This is a major change from our previous versions).</li>
<li>Turbine 2.3 uses maven as its primary build tool. Building with Eclipse is possible but not officially supported. Building with ant only is no longer supported.</li>

This release of the Tapestry web application framework adds a host of new bugs fixes and features.
An initial, rough pass at building using <a href="http://maven.apache.org">Maven</a>
is included.
3.0-beta-1 is feature complete (with some minor exceptions related to the IMonitor interface, and
the shifting dependency on
<a href="http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/fileupload/index.html">FileUpload</a>).
Future work on 3.0 will be to improve the unit test suite (82% code coverage and 423 tests simply
isn't enough), updates to all the documentation, and a full build using Maven.

release is compiled using the Sun JDK 1.3 compiler and includes

Tapestry now uses Jakarta Digester to parse specifications,
and Jakarta FileUpload to deal with multipart/form-data. A simple JSP
tag library has been created to allow JSPs to include links
to Tapestry pages (the page and external services
are supported).

now features "line precise error reporting", where runtime errors
are linked back to specific lines of templates or specification files.
Exceptions used by Tapestry were simplified and the exception hierarchy flattened,
and a new parameter direction, "auto", was added.

programming guide to supplement the API documentation.

Jason Hunter, the previous Expert Committee representative for the ASF,
was recently quoted in depth in a
<a href="http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-01-2003/jw-0131-jcp.html">JavaWorld
article about the JCP</a>. As you <a href="jspa-position.html">may or may not</a>
know, the Apache Software Foundation has been a driving force in
changing the JCP business model to accept open source practices. Please
read the entire article, but of the many great quotes that Jason
provided, this one stands out quite a bit because it reflects strongly
on one of Jakarta's most active projects:
</p>

Chiefly, as a result of the open source community's increased
involvement, those major JCP executive committee players are starting to
see a need to mind the broader Java community's interests as well. "The
issue now, with open source and community focus," notes Apache's Hunter,
"is increasingly on JSR management."
</p>
<p>
Consider the case of JSR 154, the Java Servlet Specification. "According
to the JCP rules, the spec lead makes the decisions, and the expert
group members are there to advise," says Hunter. "In JSR 154, there has
been a consistent pattern of expert opinion going one way and the spec
lead, a newly appointed Sun representative, going exactly the opposite.
That's okay once in a while, but how do you build a community where the
majority of the expert group, people who have been there for years and
are truly the world experts [on servlets], are being second-guessed
without explanation?"

The <a href='http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/'>Jakarta Commons Team</a> is pleased to
announce the 1.4 release of <a href='http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/digester.html'>Digester</a>
from the Apache Software Foundation. Digester is an XML-to-object mapper used for
(amongst other things) parsing XML configuration files.

This release contains several bug fixes together with enhanced support for XML schema
and namespace-aware rules. See the

The following Tomcat 4 versions have been verified to not have

<h3>25 January 2003 - Commons HttpClient 2.0 Alpha 2 Released</h3>

After many months and a great resurgence of developers, the new build
of <em>HttpClient</em> is finally here. The new group of developers has done
extensive refactoring to move the project along the new vision.
The code base has reached a significant level of maturity and we
expect that the beta builds will come quickly and that the
final release of 2.0 is not far away!

The Commons Team is pleased to announce the release of
<a href='http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/beanutils.html'>Commons BeanUtils</a> 1.6.
Commons BeanUtils contains utility classes that assist in dynamic access
(through reflection and introspection) to classes that conform to the
<a href='http://java.sun.com/products/javabeans/'>Sun
JavaBeans(TM) specification</a>.
</p>

This release contains bugs fixes (and some minor enhancements). For more
