[jira] Created: (INFRA-1146) Why not turn on wiki syntax in jira?

Why not turn on wiki syntax in jira?
------------------------------------

                 Key: INFRA-1146
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-1146
             Project: Infrastructure
          Issue Type: Wish
      Security Level: public (Regular issues)
          Components: JIRA
            Reporter: John Gill

I am one of the JIRA admins at work, and find the wiki syntax for the description and comment fields really useful.

Wiki syntax is achieved by configuring a wiki renderers for certain fields.

It is documented here: http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/docs/v3.4/renderers_overview.html

And here (http://jira.atlassian.com/secure/WikiRendererHelpAction.jspa?section=all) is the full wiki syntax to give you an idea of what can be achieved.

I would be particularly keen if wiki renderers were turned on in the IVY project (as that is the one that I would use the most).

Xavier Hanin commented on INFRA-1146:
-------------------------------------

I've never user this syntax before in JIRA, but in confluence it works pretty well. So I think this is a good idea. My only concern is about existing issues. But I guess we can switch back to the standard renderer if we see that too many issues look bad.

So my final word is a GO.

--------------------------------------

Because no one's asked for it? :)

I've not used it before. Looking at the docs it looks like something you configure on a per-field per-project basis? Which is good as I doubt we would want all our issues to suddenly become wiki syntax - I imagine it'd look very bad.

A few projects have customised field configuration (Cocoon, Forrest, Infra, River) and there's a Wiki scheme that Geronimo, River and a few other projects are using. So I'm guessing this is a request for IVY to use that Wiki scheme. If so, let me know and I'll go ahead and switch it.

You right, it is a per-field and per project thing, but it only applied to a
small subset of fields. However, lets see if the IVY project lead minds if
wiki syntax is turned on for the Ivy project.

Xavier, would you mind if wiki syntax was turned on in JIRA for the ivy
project? Do you think it is a good idea?

Done for the IVY project. Please reopen if you need to roll things back - I've no clue how well this will work :)

------------------------------------

IMO it's a per-project decision, unless we create a Jira "PMC" of interested developers that can claim to speak for all projects.
