Quick Guide to Universal Acceptance

Dear Admin for Spam Assassin,

Greetings from the ICANN Global Support Center.

I am reaching out to you because we have received a bug report about your spam
filtering service.

We are reported that the emails from valid addresses, namely jl@decorum.link,
are either blocked or filtered as spam by your system when they are sending
emails to info@frankweyer.com and info@ruralroute.com, despited the fact that
.link email address is whitelisted.

Kindly please look into and fix this issue.

To find out more information on NEW generic Top Level Domains (New gTLDs) and
email addresses please visit www.uasg.tech.
You might find the information there helpful as you work to fix this problem.

Please note that this is a universal acceptance issue.

Universal Acceptance (UA) is the state where all valid domain names and email
addresses are accepted, validated, stored, processed and displayed correctly
and consistently by all Internet-enabled applications, devices and systems.

Due to the rapidly changing domain name landscape, many systems do not
recognize or appropriately process new domain names, primarily because they may
be more than three characters in length or in a non-ASCII format. The same is
true for email addresses that incorporate these new extensions (example:
Mike@verycool.business, 华德@犹他.在线).

To see the list of all New gTLDs, please visit
https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/tlds-2012-02-25-en

The Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG), supported by the Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), is a community-led,
industry-wide initiative working on creating awareness and identifying and
resolving problems associated with the universal acceptance of domain names.
The purpose of these efforts is to help ensure a consistent and positive
experience for Internet users globally.

What is ICANN?
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is responsible
for managing and coordinating the Domain Name System (DNS) to ensure that every
address is unique and that all users of the Internet can find all valid
addresses. It does this by overseeing the distribution of unique IP addresses
and domain names. It also ensures that each domain name maps to the correct IP
address.

Please ask them to seek assistance on the SpamAssassin Users mailing list
first. If it's a misconfiguration or local problem of some sort it is not a bug
in SA and thus shouldn't generate a bug in the SA bugzilla.

For completeness, here is the on-list reply
Hi Seda,

A bug such as this is as akin to contacting a wrench/spanner maker because your
car won't start. At the ASF, we produce Free, Open Source Software that can
be used by anyone and everyone however they choose.

The issue relayed below is an implementation concern with frankweyer.com and
ruralroute.com as I am not aware of any default rules that specifically target
the .link TLD. You'll need to contact them and discuss the issue. Or if you
can point to a problem in the tool (not the implementation), we would be happy
to reconsider.

However, extrapolating further Re: .link and my experience is that Uniregistry
contacted me in October and I'm monitoring their TLD to identify if they have
been able to be a handle on the previous abuse that plagued the TLD. There are
problems that might be getting resolved with the TLD but if you are speaking
officially for ICANN,

What feedback can you provide about abuse with specific TLDs? For example,
.stream, .trade, .pw, .top, .press, .bid & .date are fraught with problems.
Please feel free to reach out to me at www.linkedin.com/in/kmcgrail so we can
talk further offline.

Regards,
KAM

Dear Kevin and John,

I appreciate your rapid follow-up messages. I have forwarded the instructions
and feedback you have provided to the reporter. I am including his response
below for your review. Attached you can also find the screenshots the reporter
mentioned in his response.

Reporter's response:
---------------------------
Because their system is marking my domain address as spam, the rules internal
further block the mail in each person's system. I have spoken with the
respective company's IT people which is how I became aware of Spam Assassin. It
appears from our own investigation that Spam Assassin might be using some old
possibly bad black list servers to determine what should be marked as Spam.
These servers are not recognized by tools like MXtoolbox or DNSStuff for listed
black lists.

Both of these organizations I am dealing with have tried to configure their
Spam Assassin software to stop the mislabeling. However, in doing so for the
domain frankweyer.com it caused the other domain to be blocked. The previous
attachment I provided was a direct result of what the Spam Assassin gave back
according to the IT department at these locations.
-------------------------------

I hope to hear your recommendations and support at this point. Please let us
know if you need additional information.

Best regards,

Thank you for the rapid feedback.

As the user already indicated that the IT person whitelisted .link email
address, and their emails still cannot be received by the reported
organizations, we needed to check this with you. I will forward your feedback
to the reporter.

Once again thank you for your support.

https://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/StopBlockingMyMail

spamasssassin is tag only, it does not block, if your mail is blocked, ask
postmasters of this sites that blocks/reject mails

rejecting spam is not a spamassassin bug
