[Bug 123341] New: Writer crashes on entering unicode characters not
included in selected font
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=123341
Bug ID: 123341
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Writer crashes on entering unicode characters not
included in selected font
Product: Writer
Version: 4.0.0
Hardware: PC
OS: Windows 7
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P3
Component: editing
Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
Reporter: hospes@arcor.de
CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org
Hello,
I recently had "some" crashes with Writer (just the program, latest version) as
I entered some Unicode text/characters (with no delay - no chance to save).
[System]
AMD Phenom II X4 840, 3.2GHz, 8 GB RAM
Windows 7 Prof. x64
AOO 4.0.0
Meanwhile I found that the trouble lies in entering (key stroke/paste)
characters - in my case Cyrillic and Arabian ones - which are not
included/supported by the currently selected font. This also happens when I
change the font to one that does not have this/these characters.
On the other hand there's no trouble with characters that are beyond the
ASCII/ANSI character set (256++) but which are included in the selected font
(e.g. Turkish, French).
Generally, I can't experience failures with fonts that support/include those
characters (e.g. "Arial Unicode MS").
I thought this might be a serious and noteworthy problem.
Please excuse when it already has been posted - I'm brand new in here.
Jens

Hmmm. I've got Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1, all latest updates installed.
But I guess "Professional" can't make such a difference.
What about Java? I've got
Oracle 1.7.0_25 (x64+x86)
Sun 1.6.0_43 (x86)
Sun 1.6.0_22 (x86)
Before you ask: there was an issue with another prog which still needed v6.
Well, I run out of ideas.

Well, fine for Debian users!
OK then, I will change from Win7 to Debian ...
Seriously, have you considered that fonts on Linux/Debian are quite different
from those on Windows and also its handling - not to speak of that completely
different Writer binaries?
In fact Windows can handle missing glyphs in font tables by filling these gaps
using replacement fonts. But I presume that this functionality is ignored in
OpenOffice/Writer (well at least since version 4 - cause I never had this
before) due to platform exchangeability issues.

I updated Java and downloaded 4.0.1 to install it later (no time today).
Should I install the SDK 4.0.1 too (am using 4.0.0)?

No need.
If you see appropriate, change status to "reopened" if problem persists in
4.0.1.

Well, as I wrote the problem lies in characters not contained in the selected
font table. But anyway:
fontname: "Gabriele Light Ribbon" (TTF) or "Trebuchet MS" (OTF)
crash causing text:
пόмощь сеть (Cyrillic)
شبكة مساعدة (Arabian)
non crash causing text:
Réseau d l'Aide (French)
Yardım Ağ Örgüsü (Turkish)
The same text with fontname "Arial Unicode MS" (OTF) or "Tahoma" (OTF) causes
no crash.
I really didn't try to reproduce this error with all non-listed characters in
all fonts.
<!> Sorry, if not everything will be transmitted properly. I used the
copy/paste functions.
