> Now that Log4j requires Java 7 we can begin to take advantage of more of its features. One of these is the WatchService -http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/nio/file/WatchService.html. This could be used for monitoring changes to the configuration file(s) and by the RollingFileAppender.
