The [EqualsAvoidNull |  http://checkstyle.sourceforge.net/config_coding.html#EqualsAvoidNull] and [Final local variable | http://checkstyle.sourceforge.net/config_coding.html#FinalLocalVariable] core checkstyle checks may be useful.
