404 Found Found: Exactly what does it mean?

Does error code 404 get returned in each of the following cases:
   - not listed in any web.xml
   - class could not be found in WEB-INF/classes at start-up
   - class could not be found to load on classpath during running

ie is there any difference in what Tomcat reports under these various conditions?

Also, is there any way to get Tomcat to report which web.xml files it processes and even which servlet path names it currently has registered? ie some sort of more verbose mode to watch it on start-up?
