[1.2] Runaway processes

Linux, Apache httpd 2.1 as proxy, two processors
Lenya 1.2.2, Cocoon 2.1.6
Lenya 1.2.5, Cocoon 2.1.10

"top" usually shows less than 1% usage.  Pairs of java processes
appear using (combined) 90% of a processor and only disappear when
Lenya is restarted.  The server slows with 2 pairs and practically
stalls when 3 pairs appear.
Lenya handles hundreds of requests per day for weeks without a
problem.  Editing Documents and adding Assets does not cause problem.
Upgrade from 1.2.2 to 1.2.5 did not cure problem.
I have yet to force problem to occur.  Best idea was GoogleBot trying
to retrieve non-existent Assets, but problem does not occur during
testing of similar requests.

Any suggestions about possible causes would be very welcome.
