Welcome to Helder Magalhães as a committer

Hello all,

I’d just like to congratulate Helder Magalhães on being voted in as a
committer for the Apache Batik project! Helder has been doing great
work recently answering questions on the mailing list and keeping newly
filed bugs from going unanswered.

Helder, perhaps you’d like to add yourself to
http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/batik/contributors.html and also the
Squiggle splash screen? :)

Thanks too to Clay Leeds for organizing the vote.

Please make sure that for any contribution of size the contributor
has a CLA on file. Also make sure to run regard before and after the
patch is applied to ensure no regressions. Finally, especially for
SVG content/script bug fixes please try to make sure that a test
exists in regard that fails before and not after the fix.

Very good, if you have any questions let us know.

    Sounds good.

This is fine, I never finished the switch over to Java Image IO as I
didn't have the time to ensure forward compatibility in all the corner
cases.
Perhaps it doesn't matter anymore and we should make Java Image I/O the
default and let people use the original encoders/decoders by switching the
SPI file.

Thanks for the cheers up, everyone: I really appreciate it. ;-) I
also take this opportunity to thank who have expressed trust [1] for
my contributions; I hope to convince the remaining in the long run.
:-)

Clay has already gave a hand and add me to the contributors listing
(thanks!). I should also mention (and thank) Simon Pepping for helping
with other parts of the setup. :-)

By coincidence, I had already thought about the splash screen (and
added to my TODO list), but thanks for bringing it up. :-)

Tightly related, I'm leaving my wish list, containing a set of
short/medium-term aims (I'd like to do/help out):

1. Reduce the patch queue, looking into committing (at least) the set
of trivial patches currently available;
(I really feel something like a 1.7.1 or 1.8 release should be made
available soon.)
2. Improve the documentation, fixing it and updating it to the reflect
the current trunk status [2];
(I have a ton of typos and such waiting to be committed; also,
there are a couple of candidate items to be added to the FAQ.)
3. Try to improve the regression tool, regard.
(There was already some debate [3] on this, so I'll probably create
a bug to track progress on this as Cameron suggested.)
4. Cleanup Sun proprietary stuff and/or improve GNU ClassPath compatibility
   (See bugs 38183 [4] and 46513 [5].)
5. Improve the JSVGCanvas applet demo in order to provide a
cross-browser, high quality environment for SVG development/deployment
(Maybe through resurrecting what seemed to be an official applet,
dropped back in 2001 [6]... Can anybody recall why?)

As usual, feedback to this list would be appreciated; similarly,
proposing other actions which would be interesting to look at: I'm not
saying that I'll pick them up, but there may be things slipping
through my radar; also, others might find it valuable and jump in...
;-)

Happy new year,
  Helder
