Problems building fulcrum & turbine, merlin-related

I try to compile fulcrum every now and then in order to prepare my
applications for the next version of turbine.
Since merlin has become widely used for testing I've never been able to
complete all the tests.

Everyone can try for themselves just by spending a few minutes: take any
broadband-enabled machine that can run Java (this test has some sense only
if the machine never ran merlin before), install maven, cvs-get
jakarta-turbine-fulcrum, run maven. I'll post a full report as soon as I'll
have some spare time, but the errors you'll get are all about merlin not
recognizing the version strings of the fulcrum components, because they
include an alphanumeric part ('alpha') which avalon Extension tries to
convert to an integer (please find an excerpt of the test report at the end
of this message).

Some weeks ago someone suggested that I tried to get newer merlin bits. I
must say that it even got worse.

For example, I've found that merlin-unit has seen a lot of releases newer
than the 3.2.2-dev referenced by fulcrum-crypto-impl. Try to build against,
let's say 3.2.10, and you won't even be able to compile the test classes!

If you want to try, apply the following changes to crypto/impl/project.xml:

--- project.xml 18 Jan 2004 14:15:52 -0000      1.2
+++ project.xml 13 Feb 2004 19:06:25 -0000

+      <version>3.2.10</version>
+      <url>http://dpml.net/merlin/jars/</url>
     </dependency>

   </dependencies>

TurbineMerlinComponentService has similar problems. It uses old versions of
some merlin components, and if you try to build against newer versions
you'll discover that , for example, the DefaultFileRepository class doesn't
exist any more: the whole merlin repository code has been replaced by some
new AvalonRepository infrastructure which is not interface-compatible with
the old one.

I know: building Turbine from source has never been an easy task, but lately
this is becoming overly complicated. I hope it's not just me: how many
people other than Eric is successfully building & testing all the code? With
maven not Eclipse?

I'm not (yet?) a contributor to the project, so my opinion is not
authoritative enough, but I don't think Turbine 2.4 can be closed if it's
using merlin and avalon jars marked -dev more than 6 month old, given that
more recent ones are completely incompatible.

Sorry for the long 'lamentation', I hope it can trigger some comments from
the most merlin- and/or avalon- proficient people reading this list!

Ciao
Angelo Turetta

Checking into this now!

p.s.

The version string is "1.0-alpha-4" is not allowed acording to the
java optional extension spec - it must me a comparative version id -
e.g. 1.0.4.

Steve.
