[doc] new "Getting Started" guides

As discussed earlier today, there are now two new "Getting Started"
guides on the website, accessible from the homepage.

   http://incubator.apache.org/harmony/quickhelp_users.html

   http://incubator.apache.org/harmony/quickhelp_contributors.html

There is still more work to do - for example, we need to fill in the
lists of tools needed and dependencies. (I'll add a fresh Ubuntu VM
in Parallels tomorrow and work though all the deps that need to be
added....)

Give a read, test it out, and comment...

Geir,

At http://incubator.apache.org/harmony/quickhelp_users.html,

There is a "download page" link to,
  http://incubator.apache.org/harmony/download.html
which should be,
  http://incubator.apache.org/harmony/downloads.html

Both are good. And much better then commercial one. :)

Vladimir,
It's license is not very important for us since we do not plan to
include it in Harmony. We just suggest a tool to user.

Sure you can - we're not distributing it - we're just noting it's a
tool for people to use. You can use tools to do your work no matter
what license they are under, as long as the tools themselves don't
place some kind of restriction or burden on the output.

I mentioned winzip because 99.999% of every windows box I've ever
seen had it. But yes, that's good - I'll collect all the suggestions
in this thread and add those.

It's the most basic example for someone who is just getting
familiar. I'm assuming that if that's how they like to generally
work, they'll do that. (I dothat - I just copy "working_vm" ...)

Maybe a note there might help...

Not only. But this is one of the options.

Yes - clearly more work needs to be done. I hadn't listed all the
tools yet. This is a good point.

And that's funny... "Open Visual Studio" :)

Another suggestion is to mention that Windows build of the native classlib's
code requires valid MSVC environment. In other words I can build classlib on
Windows only from within a "Open Visual Studio .NET 2003 Command Prompt"
shell.

Geir,
Why do we need an example with "ant populate_source" and "working_*" dirs ?
Why just not to tell something like: the advise is to copy the clean harmony
directories into a separate folder(e.g. harmony_mypatch) and build it
there. Doing this you can avoid to do complete checkout again when you need
to prototype a new feature.

Re: [doc] new "Getting Started" guides

Posted by Sian January <si...@googlemail.com>.
Hi Geir,

Those new documents look really good. I just found a few spelling mistakes
on the first one (http://incubator.apache.org/harmony/quickhelp_users.html).

In the first paragraph "no development tools our need to" should probably be
"no development tools or need to". In the fourth paragraph "run well on the
paltforms offered" should be "run well on the platforms offered" and in the
fifth paragraph I think "unpack inÄto a jre directory" should be "unpack
into a jre directory".

I hope you don't think I'm being picky - I just think it's better for the
project's image if we have correct spelling and grammar etc on the website.

Thanks,

Sian

Yes, you are right about confusing "release" word. Let's forget about it and
start from the beginning. My point is that we should give clear message to a
newbie that the project consists of independent parts and we should provide
the newbie with a shortest path to a part where the newbie want to
contribute.

For example, 3 steps:
Apache Harmony Home page
    ->Getting Started For Contributors page
        -> Component's homepage

The path shouldn't lead to nowhere, like saying: go to the dev-mail archive
or JIRA and search for [classlib][<module name>]. The path to a component
should end with component's status info – ideally it should give the newbie
enough info not to search though harmony-dev mail archive or JIRA at all. At
minimum the path should lead the newbie to the component's wiki page. Yes,
wiki pages are good but I think we need more. What the component's home page
should contain? From my point of view it should contain the following:
1) Doc: just brief overview and pointers to spec., docs, user's guides
2) Work with the component: how to build, deploy with Harmony JRE (or
another JRE if possible) and run with apps.
3) Status: in progress, no activity or done (that I mean by saying
"released", sorry for confusion)
4) Open issues: info from JIRA (we can fetch issues related only to the
component from JIRA)
5) Mailing list: I think we should let the newbie to be aware only about
exact part of the project.
6) Wiki page

For example, the newbie may be interesting in contributing to BEANS and
don't want to receive tons of messages about VM. We may let message pass
from component's mailing list to common mailing list. (Even more we may add
required prefix to subject automatically, for example, "problems with
Introspector" => "[classlib][beans] problems with Introspector")

Does this make sense?

I thought that it may be not quite clear for newbie how to use modularity.
May be I'm wrong.

  Second, the

Yes, I understood you point. I don't suggest delivering some framework or
a tool and announcing it as "piece of JAVA". IANAL, I just wonder if we can
suggest a user to try the following testing scenario: take some module's
jar, for example, sql.jar and try an app that depends on SQL API with JRE
that she/he usually uses. Is this restricted by the license?

Sure. We should put something to indicate the parts then. The
federated checkout is nice because once you do it, you really do have
two independent trees to work with, so you could simply just go into
working_classlib and never come out :)

Maybe the problem is a simple confusion over the word "release". What
do you mean here? We'd have a download called "harmony-ketool-
v1.0.tar.gz"? I'm guessing that this isn't what you mean. Sorry for

First, classlib is modular so users can do that already. Second, the
Java SE spec license doesn't allow independent releases as in "we are
choosing to distribute this as shipping software", so we don't want
to take on that issue.

A structure can be
- Classlib

Sometimes it is hard to swallow a whole pile. J2SE implementation is a big
pile.
I don't see anything wrong here why not to suggest the newbie to try a
piece of the pile.

For example, what the problem with releasing 'keytool' or 'beans
framework'?
Why these parts should wait until we complete full toolset of classlib?

IMHO, we unintentionally pushed idea of independency components to project's
backyard. I think this is not good.

Yes, high mail traffic might be a problem it constantly grows. And subject's
line definitely helps now but I'm not sure about future.
Also some parts of the project are indeed independent. For example, it may
be possible to take some framework from classlib, say logging framework, and
try it with another JRE. And the framework should work. This is true
independence. So it seems more natural for me to create a sub-project for
the framework to let it be more attractive for users: has less bugs, is
faster, follows the spec. and so on. Why not?

Thanks,
Stepan.

I understand. Remember, this is targetted for newbies - people who
don't know anything yet, and what it tries to do is find the fastest
path to getting working code from a single checkout.

Good point. But what other components right now would you point to?

No. There no sense in releasing just a classlibrary or a virtual
machine. Or a toolset. You need the whole pile.

I think we need to continue to focus on our primary goal, java SE.
I've also been concerned about having "subprojects" that are too
independent, creating sub-communities. I think that should be
avoided at all cost. Sure, we each have our focus and
specialization, but we're one project, one community.

We have categories for JIRA - doesn't that work? Mail list is busy,
but right now we seem to be doing ok in terms of segmenting by
subject line, and quite frankly, I still think that the benefits of
intermixing currently outweigh the costs. yes, we need a user list
soon, and someday we'll split VM from classlib, but right now,
there's such good collaboration...

As for homepages, we already have that - basic pages for each major
component.

Hi Geir,

It is great that you've created guides and put references to them at top. So
now it is clear for newcomer what the next step is. And I'd like to suggest
the following improvement for contributors guide: the page contains only few
words about projects parts and it may create impression that Harmony is a
one big/complex piece of software that has a lot of dependencies to
download. I think that it is important to say clearly in the beginning of
the page that the project consists of many quite independent parts. And the
newcomer has a choice to work with whole code base (a.k.a. federated build)
or with a part of the project. So the top of the page should contain two
references to federated build and to a description of the project's
components.

We have instructions for federated build. It looks OK for me. And the
description of components should give detailed picture of all components not
just mention VM and Classlib. And the components' description should points
to components' homepages.

BTW, just random idea. I'd let each module to live by its own life by having
its own homepage, releases, mailing list and JIRA component, like we have
for ORB module (Apache Yoko project). Does this make sense?
