[Bug 124321] New: A User is Unable to See Areas of Hidden Text in a Document Once Something is Marked Hidden

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124321

            Bug ID: 124321
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: A User is Unable to See Areas of Hidden Text in a
Document Once Something is Marked Hidden
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.0.1
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows 7
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: ui
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: amalia_ocejo@progressive.com
                CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org

Step by Step Instructions to Recreate the Problem and screen shots to
illustrate the problem.

Problem: I am unable to see in a document where something may have beem marked
as Hidden. Once something has been selected and marked as Hidden, the selected
item disappears from the document view. There is no special marking on the
document to indicate there was something hidden. THerfore, anyone viewing a
document with hidden text will never know there are things being hidden.

Expected Result: An indicator to the user that something is hidden when
something has been marked as hidden.

Impact: I think this would impact processes around reviewing legal and process
documentation that must requires sign off and an understanding by multiple
parties. There are no identified impacts to other functionality within the
program.

Steps to Recreate:
(1)PreConditions:
• OpenOffice Writer is Open
• Navigator is displayed
• Document with Text is displayed and ready to use
(2)Select text on the document
(3)Select <Insert> from ToolBar
(4)Select <Section>from Drop Down Menu
(5)<Insert Section> dialogue box appears
(6)Select <Hide> Checkbox from dialogue box
(7)Click <Insert> Button from dialogue box
(8)Selected Text is no longer visible on document.
....any viewer from this point on would not know or be able to detect on the
document that any line of text has been marked hidden.

Attachments: See attached document that illustrates the problem.

Additional Notes: This bug report is steming from Bug 46729 where I thought
the original author was reporting two distinct bugs in one bug report. I am
parsing the two bugs into seperate bug reports to ensure each is given it's due
dilligence.

Using AOO 4.0.1 on Windows 7

Amalia indicated her report is related to bug 46729. The original report
requested the ability to show/hide text from the context menu.

Rainier Bielefeld suggested "show all hidden sections" as a possible
enhancement to the original document.

I think it would also be useful for the document creator to be able to show
previously hidden text in much the same way one can show and hide columns in a
spreadsheet. I expected that I would be able do that by unchecking the Hide box
to unhide it. That did not work. When I selected a previously hidden section
that I now wanted to show, the Hide checkbox was no longer checked. (See
attached screenshot)

I searched the User Documentation and didn't see a way to show the text, once
hidden.

Screen shot showing Insert Section dialog box

The selected section 1 is currently hidden. Notice that the Hide checkbox is
unchecked even though the text remains hidden.

To be honest, I can't imagine what the problem here might be

NOT reproducible with "AOO 4.0.1 Release – German UI / German locale
[AOO401m5(Build:9714) - Rev. 1524958 2013-09-20 11:40:29]" on German WIN7
Home Premium (64bit)", “historic” 4.0 User Profile used for all predecessor
versions.

My Test:
0. From AOO Start Center open new Writer document
1. Type 3 Paragraphs "Line 1", "Line 2", "Line 3",
2. Select all Paragraph 2 "Line 2"
3. Menu 'Insert -> Section - check "Hide" -> [Insert]'
   > "Line 2" text has disappeared, Navigator will show a section
"Section1" what is greyed to show that section is hidden.

That is exactly what help says: "The components of a hidden sections appear
gray in the Navigator. When you rest your mouse pointer over a hidden component
in the Navigator, the Help tip "hidden" is displayed.

And it's the characteristic of hidden things that they are hidden ...

The only enhancement I can imagine as a progress would be a feature 'show all
hidden sections' what would make all hidden sections visible, may be with an
additional mark like gray background in document or so so that they can be
found easily

@Amalia
What exactly is your problem?

I see no bug here. It is the purpose of "Hide" to make the section invisible.

A hidden section is still listed in the Navigator. It is written there in gray.
That can be seen in the picture in the "Step by Step Instructions..". Or you
use "Format > Sections", which lists hidden sections too.

"Insert > Section" is the wrong tool to examine existing sections.
