For those of you looking for some resources to get started:

1) Start by reading Apache's GSoC information:

   and Google's informaton:

2) Read the general information about contributing to and working on Derby:

   http://db.apache.org/derby/derby_comm.html

   http://wiki.apache.org/db-derby/ForNewDevelopers

3) Follow the instructions for downloading the Derby code, building Derby, and running Derby tests

   http://wiki.apache.org/db-derby/ForNewDevelopers#Check_Out.2C_Build_the_Code_and_run_the_Tests

If you get confused at any point along the way, ask questions on the derby-dev mailing list, and Derby community members will be glad to help you out.
