GSOC proposal about "Junit test conversions and bug fixes" from a returning student

Hi, everyone. Nice to write to you again after one year. Last year, I
have done some work on Derby, inssues I finished are listed below:

DERBY-3991 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-3991,
DERBY-3853 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-3853,
DERBY-2769 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-2769,
DERBY-3941https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-3941,
DERBY-4134 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-4134

I would love to return to Derby for this year's GSOC, and have chosen
"Junit test conversions and bug fixes" as my project idea. As to my
former work on derby, I believe I can finish the project idea well.

However I have also seen the idea is not listed in the Apache GSOC
projects [1], could anyone do me a favor to mentor me on the project
idea this GSOC? Any advice is welcome!

Thanks a lot! Wish for your reply!

Sincerely
Yun

Thanks a lot for your reminding, Bryan! I have put up my initial
application at the Google 2010 site just now, and will revise it in
the next couple days.

Thanks again!

Sincerely
Yun

The most important advice I have is: put your application online at the
Google 2010 site NOW! The deadline is this Friday, barely 48 hours from
now, and you don't want to have some sort of snafu or accidental mistake
by waiting til the last minute.

So put your application up now, containing all the information that you
have collected so far.

Then, if you have additions or changes that you want to make over the next
couple days, you are allowed to edit and revise your application up until
Friday's deadline.

Good luck, and thanks for applying!

It's happy to hear the message. It encouraged me greatly. Thank you
very much, Myrna and Kathey!

It seems we needn't worry about Myrna's vocation, I can get help from
Kathey and our community. IMO, communicating with community is the
most interesting part of the open source experience.

I plan to prepare my proposal the two days, and could you give me any
advice before applying? Besides, what can I do on my task in the
following days?

Thanks a lot!

sincerely
Yun

Thanks so much Myrna for stepping up to mentor test and fix. I think
this has been a successful project in past years and I am sure will be
again with your guidance.

I can take over the administrative tasks during this time.

It would be great to see a student pick up the remaining derbynet tests
so we can build on Tiago's work to get parallel test runs going. As for
technical reviews, I am really hoping this summer, we will get a lot of
broad based input on student patches so they have a more realistic
community experience. I will try to branch out beyond my student and
review others patches.

Hi Yun,

Glad to see you back...

I'm willing to mentor a project 'test conversion and fix bugs'.
However, I'll be on vacation from June 12 to July 4. So, someone will
have to take over at least the administrative mentoring tasks during
that period...

Also, I'd like to point out that depending on which bugs you pick to
fix, we may need to rely on the community as a whole to provide
technical reviews. I'd like to focus my own reviews on converting
tests, especially the remaining tests in derbynet.

Trusting that someone will step up to back me up during my vacation,
I'll do the official steps to become a mentor...

Myrna
