Hello guys,

sorry for my english, we are an Italian software house that has created a
product that bases its technology on frontend flex.

As this product on our core business, and being a project on which they work
twenty developers would be interested to know what the future developments
of this technology now that is passed to Apache, if you plan to integrate
and evolve the Flash Builder and if there are plans to improve the
performance of the compiler (real problem in high-profile projects).

Thank you for your attention, good job!

Gordon might have better information, but he's on vacation for a while,
IIRC.

Back when Adobe first talked about Falcon (before November 2011), numbers
like 5x were discussed, but I believe they were for incremental compilation
when integrated into Flash Builder. Adobe did not commit to integrating the
Apache version of Falcon into Flash Builder, so our version of Falcon may
never be used for incremental compiles so we may not be able to get that
kind of compiler performance. So let's lower expectations on performance.
I think I heard 2x was possible in some non-incremental situations, but that
is old information.

Cataldo,

Flash Builder was not donated to the Apache Software Foundation -- Adobe
retained it as a commercial product. We unfortunately don't have control
over its direction or performance. There is an understanding between Adobe
and our project that they will remain compatible with it if at all
possible. We are striving (and testing against) Flash Builder for our own
project to make sure we can at least compile our own project with it. You
can check out how to get started with Apache Flex and Flash Builder here :
http://flex.apache.org/doc-getstarted.html (hopefully it translates well!)

There is a lot of work being done with a new compiler, known as "Falcon".
This is the next generation compiler that was started by Adobe and donated
to us midway through development. It is not 100% there yet, but if you
read this mailing list, there are lots of strides being made in a short
amount of time that will make it complete. This is the new compiler that
Adobe was saying was going to be 5x faster (our tests are not as
optimistic), but at the very least it will move us forward and further than
we've ever been. The new compiler is also allow us to play with multiple
outputs, including HTML5.

Flash Builder is not part of Apache Flex. It's owned by Adobe.

There's a lot of compiler work going on.
