May I suggest a new API to phonegap that allows access to the proximity sensor on phones. This is the sensor that switches off the screen when the user has the device against his/her face. 

This has many possible applications like: counters, timers, and VoIP applications. 

This new feature can have its own API like the Accelerometer or Compass, or it can be piggybacked on the Events API.
