Softpedia: Apache OpenOffice Downloaded More than 100 Million Times,
but Not on Linux
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Apache-OpenOffice-Downloaded-More-than-100-Million-Times-But-Not-on-Linux-438293.shtml
I'd like to double check my logic here.
What fraction of our downloads would you expect Linux to be?
A niche open source application might see different results than one
that had mainstream adoption. That is the expectation. If your
appeal is mainly to the open source "insiders" then you will see a
higher proportion of Linux downloads. If your user base reflects the
overall desktop market, then your downloads will reflect this as well.
We've seen, since Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0, that Linux users comprise
1.8% of our downloads.
The latest Netcraft survey of Desktop OS usage puts Linux as 1.49%. [1]
So, our Linux desktop usage is slightly more than we'd expect, from a
widespread adoption perspective, but only slightly.
So what am I missing here? Why would anyone expect anything other
than the obvious trend, that the most-user operating systems would
also be most used by OpenOffice users?

I remind you that many Linux distros, if asked for OpenOffice, silently substitute LibreOffice. Some time ago there was discussion on this ML about trying to prevent such a silent substitution, but I think (memory may be faulty) that it needed special compilations for each of the linux repros.

The fact that Linux is about 2% of our downloads with Linux itself at about
2% of the desktop market share should tell anyone that our downloads are
right in line with the reality of the desktop market looking at just the
overall results and NOT uniqueness.

You're not missing anything. This article makes me want to scream! Maybe
we should contact the author regarding his math and logic. The reality is
even some Linux users with access to LibreOffice in their repositories
still would prefer and do install Apache OpenOffice.

Because Opera offers a dedicated install set for many Linux distros?
And Firefox not?
Firefox is pre-installed on many Linux distros and the need for a
perfect manual download therefore not high. The users get new versions
via the automatic update.
However, I don't know how it is with Opera as it is now also open source
since version 16 (currently 20).

Maybe however I think the big issue here are Linux users having a poor
download experience. For example I would have Opera browser does a good job
when handling linux users that want to download their app. However Mozilla

The article stick with download numbers, not installed base. And yeah the
issue here is that no major distribution is packaging AOO. The DistroWatch
numbers on top distros show LibreOffice as the default Office suite.

Yes, we don't count with these numbers as they are not known. And
nowadays I don't know of any (wide-spreaded) Linux distro with
pre-installed AOO.

To amplify. I can't find my own set of data on the matter but it ought no to be very hard to find in an online archive; I mean OS distribution. We started out, in 2001-2004 with a fair amount of Linux (and even a few diehard Solaris). When the Mac OS X OS became avail., in 2004, I think, it used X11 but there was a significant spike in DLs. There was also a lot of press. That seemingly motivated Win. users to download the binaries, and once begun, the momentum grew. Linux diminished in proportion but probably grew in size (we had a LOT of downloads, in total, far more than 100M), but Win (and also Mac OS X, once it was Aquafied) took off. Towards the end, if memory serves me right, we were counting roughly 95% plus Win. (Japan, Italy, Germany, France and en-US were major downloading country codes and language identities, if I recall.)

I do, up to a point.
The data we have now do not significantly differ from what we tracked then. And we noted then, too, that Linux made up a minuscule percentage of our downloads. We published this. I'm surprised, Alexandro, you ask. You were around then.
Linux distributions during OO.o's heyday included OO.o and served it from their own repos. Now, they honour LO with that.

I also have no number anymore in mind after 3-4 years. However, I
remember it was slightly higher like 7% or so.
Bu that doesn't matter with Windows at ~90% and the remining counts for Mac.

Of course we can change the wording on the download webpage. But I think
this wouldn't change much as long as we don't adapt the software itself
to fit better to the Linux distros - starting from the installation
within the distro's repos.

Havent read the article yet, but what was the percentage of Linux downloads
in OpenOffice.org? And how does Apache OpenOffice Linux downloads compared
to this one?
Also from a Marketing perspective we should enhance the download to a
distro-specific, like Apache OpenOffice for Ubuntu and Apache OpenOffice
for Fedora, etc.
Even if you could argue, we hae a .deb and a .rpm, it makes the user more
secure that his download will work with Ubuntu 14.x

The article is too inconsequential to be worth commenting on. But I'll
jump in this "what fraction should Linux be" thing.
It could be higher. But this wouldn't necessarily be good (or bad) news.
Explanation: imagine that OpenOffice is the only suite available for,
say, an operating system named Y. Then every Y user would download
OpenOffice. Even if Y only has 10% market share, the fact that ALL users
of Y download OpenOffice would mean that it accounts for many more
downloads than 10%, say 20% of our downloads. The reason is that Windows
users, for example, may choose among many office suites: not ALL of them
will download OpenOffice, while ALL the Y users will; and this would
skew the numbers.
Then, in real life, these concepts lose any meaning, since the available
office suites differ by platform, one can install more than one suite
(or none), bundles affect the motivation to download a suite... For
sure, when every desktop PC user in the world uses OpenOffice, then the
percentage of Linux downloads will match the percentage of desktops
running Linux. But until then, it can be, like in our case, 30% higher
than the percentage of desktops running Linux and this simply means
nothing (well, if NOBODY used OpenOffice on Windows we would see 0%
downloads from Windows, 70-80% from Mac and 20%-30% from Linux... but we
would be far less successful!).
Regards,
Andrea.

I think there is an important distinction to make. There are really
two numbers we can look at:
1) The probability that an AOO user will be running Linux
and
2) The probability that a Linux user will be running AOO
We only report the 1st number. It is the only number we can measure
directly. But I think some writers confuse it for the 2nd number,
which we cannot measure directly, but could estimate with some
Bayesian calculations.

Maybe the author doesn't take into account that Linux comes with
preinstalled Office software. The most users perhaps won't change this
installation set and stick wit the preinstallation.
Windows on the other hand has no Office preinstalled. So, the users have
to install one by themselves. The chances are much higher that they
choose AOO.
The same for Mac, also no preinstalled Office - ahm, AFAIK: ;-)
For me also an argument that the download numbers are higher than for Linux.

Could be many things, from worst to less bad: Payola, bias, prejudice,
copy-paste journalism repeating the "facts" from the Other Side,
ignorance... ;)
