Design change for side bar
Hi all,
the pending review request
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125989 is about a change
in the visual style of the side bar. We do not have a special "Design"
group and I do not want to decide alone. So please have a look at
screenshots in that issue.
Is this a problem, I should forward to the users mailing list?

I'm not a design specialist, so the following is my personal opinion:
To be honest, I don't care too much. I don't see a real benefit when the
group highlighting is visible or not. IMHO the highlightning is not a
big eye-catcher to make a difference. *)
However, we really need an update in the general UI. So, when others
also think it's a good idea - and a starting point for UI improvements -
, then OK let's do it.
Furthermore when it's improving the consistency then it's also an
argument to remove it in the sidebar.

If you want to have more opinions then yes. But please remember:
Decisions are done in the dev@ mailing list. ;-)

The patched version is indeed better IMHO. I've always wondered about this white shading. It may also lessen the troubles with themes in case they can have an impact.

Thanks for the comparison presentation.
Although the "flat" icons do not make it clear what the extent
of the button is, mouse-over makes it very clear, as do the
resultant tool tips.
So long as there is no difficulty with regard to accessibility,
the icons with full transparency to the background do seem to
provide a cleaner and simpler presentation.

For me, any changes in UI must be implemented as an option.
End-user can enable or not through a menu or dialogbox.

I put my comments in the issue. I actually prefer the design as it is now,
but, just my opinion.
In any case, thanks for bringing this to "dev". The changes do need more
feedback I think.
