Yes, tomcat can handle SSL.

There is no special typ of servlet for ssl necessarry.
It is to set the connector within tomcat to use ssl and that
is it. With the connection to apache, I think to remember that
mod_proxy don't work with ssl for connect with tomcat, but
mod_jk work with ssl.

I guess Tomcat *could* handle SSL, if the apache front-end acted as a
proxy and passed the traffic via CONNECT. But I've never heard of an SSL
servlet for Tomcat - does one exist?
