- does it have a horizontal scrollbar ?
- does the topbar/titlebar span 100%
- are the menu looking ok
- are the fonts ok

No.

Yes, but the titlebar only says "Home" rather than something longer so
it's hard to tell.

Yes, and yes.

yes

no, the boxes are missing. i.e. not sep lines at all. Including all the
boxes, not only menus.

And the spacing between menu items is huge - like the margin is of the
size of the item.

> - are the fonts ok

I've also checked in Opera5/linux, looks good.

It fits OK here. I'm using a 800x600 screen.

It fills the space besides the logo.

Why the item 'Documentation' has a gray background? All the others are
white.

Very nice to read.

Platform: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 on Windows 2000

No scrollbar, 100% top-bar, great menu, great fonts. This one looks
just right!

we try to hit the widest range, so if can, yes. how widespread is this
version? 4.79 is out.

I think it's better if it is not.

hmm,
<wild stab in the dark>
could you possibly download the html file and the stylesheet
and see if it works locally? maybe reduce the html/css until
it shows relatively ok

dont think so but i would prefer it works in any ns4+

My 4.08 shows it correctly for just a instant and then changes into that
image above without resizing. Maybe it's something with my config. Most
sites with style limited style sheets works. Of course the styles that
don't work with 4.08, don't work. MySQL site works fine, but I guess
that's using tables.

Was it decided that the site should or should not have to work in 4.08?

mozilla 0.9.7 seems to work ok on Windows. Is the menu suppose to be a box
inside a box?

Sorry, I don't know :(

It does, but it seems to be broken. That's the KDE project's browser.

I've tried, I couldn't do anything about NS's problem. With konqueror,
the moment you add some more content that has wrap the horizontal line
shows up.

I was saying that the left margin in the menu box is narrower than the
right one. but sure you proposal is just fine.

All these 160px and similar should be replaced with % I believe. If I
have a very narrow screen, I don't want the menu to take it up. Well you
know what I mean :) Or is there a way to tell, use at most %15 or
something like that?

do you know if or can you try to see if box-borders for
<div>-tags are possible at all for ns4.79/linux - this is so
surprising (and annoying) if not possible.

wrt konqueror (horizontal-scrollbar), i simply dont know
this browser at all but i reckon it must have some sort of
css-support, right?

could you possibly try a little with the ugly (and wrapped)
html below?

> >>-0 means that it's usable but bad (I posted the reasons before). -1 is

to sum up further this idea of table-less idea:

[
current url:
http://www.bullitt.suite.dk/div/download/index2.html

focusing on the following:
- does it have a horizontal scrollbar?
- does the topbar/titlebar span 100%
- are the menu looking ok
- are the fonts ok

* linux *
mozilla 0.9.7 +1
NS 4.79 -0
opera5 +1
konqueror -0
lynx +1
links +1

* mac 9 *
ns4.79 +1 (well, +0.5)
ie 5.0 +1
opera 5.0 +1
icab -0
ns 6.2 +1

*mac osX*
ie 5.0 +1

*win98*
ns 4.08 +1 (bill disagrees on this)
ie 5.0 +1

*win2k*
ie 6 +1
]

> >>BTW, I didn't notice earlier, but on mozilla there is a wider margin on

if i understand you right we could skip the border around
the menu-box (like on
http://www.bullitt.suite.dk/div/download/index2.html),
no-one will notice this i guess.

every bug can be counted as a feature at times :)

Could be that it's better, but the vertical spacing is too big. But I'm
almost sure that if we make the other pages look like this NS will show
it differently again :) or :(

I did already. Here is the summary:

mozilla 0.9.7 +1
NS 4.79 -0
opera5 +1
konqueror -0
lynx +1
links +1

Galeon uses the same rendering engine as mozilla (gecko), so it looks
the same.

-0 means that it's usable but bad (I posted the reasons before). -1 is
not usable.

BTW, I didn't notice earlier, but on mozilla there is a wider margin on
the right side of the menu.

hi bill,
i have been checking this on win98, 4.08 too.

it works ok here (i.e. the way i expect it).

- no horizontal scrollbar
- 100% topbar
- ok menu
- ok fonts

if i resize the window, yes, then things will look very bad
but this is a known "feature" of the < 6 ns browsers and it
happens on every single site wearing a stylesheet.

i would very much like if someone near a *nix/mozilla (or
other combination) could confirm that what they see is ok,
stas, thomas?
