Adding j2g to site

All,

After the recent round of changes and improvements around j2g (usable from
within the Eclipse IDE UI, Annotations support, improved logging/information
output, support for EJB 3), as well as a bit of interest out in the general
open source community in moving applications from Jboss to Geronimo (such as
today's inquiry on theserverside.com), I feel as though it would be of some
benefit to have j2g, at least the content in our confluence wiki (
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC20/j2g-migration-tool.html) linked somewhere
on the actual geronimo homepage. I was thinking either as it's own link
under 'Subprojects', much as Development Tools, GBuild, or XBean are
situated, or as an addition inside the Development Tools page, much as the
current Eclipse Plug-in section rests within there.

I am willing to commit to doing a bit of additional writing (beyond what is
on the wiki) if it were to be under it's own section, or a subsection of
development tools if necessary, but I think it would be good to get it up
and out there sooner rather than later, especially to coincide with the
recent release of 2.0.1 to perhaps show those out there remotely interested
in migrating, there are tools available to assist and perhaps 'hold their
hand' a bit.

Thoughts? Comments? Objections?

Thanks

With the recent activity and interest on the user/dev list with people who
are actually USING the j2g migration tool, I think we really need to make
these documents easily available asap.

I believe that the J2G link should reside under the "Subprojects" category
on our main page. This way the tool itself will get more exposure and
hopefully be easier to find for those who are interested in developing
and/or testing it out.

Maybe even post something about J2G under the "News" section to make sure it
will be more visible to those who are new.

I like it. I just glanced through it real quick but I think it might be
prudent to mention what versions of geronimo the tool is for on the
downloads page. I'm sure it's on the migration tool page already, but I
don't think it would hurt to reiterate that early on.

Re: Adding j2g to site

Posted by "Erik B. Craig" <gi...@gmail.com>.
I do believe that the devtools subproject is indeed the best place for it
given it's purpose and functionality, that said, here are some proposed
changes to the devtools subproject page.

Add a section identical to the existing 'Eclipse Plug-in' that contains the
following:
--------------------------------------
 J2G Migration Tool

JBoss to Geronimo (J2G(link to
http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/GMOxDOC20/J2G+Migration+Tool)) is
a tool set built as Eclipse SDK plug-ins designed to assist in migrating the
sources of an application written for the JBoss application server or
written for Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) to the Apache Geronimo
platform.
Prerequisites

   -

   Sun JDK 5.0+ (J2SE 1.5)
   -

Eclipse SDK 3.3 with JDT Core Plug-in
   -

   Apache Geronimo 1.1.1 and up
   -

Application written for JBoss 3.2 and up or J2EE 1.2 and up.

--------------------------------------
In addition to this, revamp the 'Downloads' section of the page to contain
the following:
---------------------------------------
 Downloads

*Eclipse Plug-in Latest Release - Version 1.2.0*
Version 1.2.0 of the Eclipse Plug-in has been released. The plugin can be
installed directly from within WTP version
1.5.2<http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/R1.5/R-1.5.2-200610261841/><http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/R1.5/R-1.5.2-200610261841/><http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/R1.5/R-1.5.2-200610261841/>,
by clicking on the "Don't see your server
listed?<http://geronimo.apache.org/devtools/Screenshot_1.jpg><http://geronimo.apache.org/devtools/Screenshot_1.jpg><http://geronimo.apache.org/devtools/Screenshot_1.jpg>"
link when defining a runtime in WTP.

Alternatively, the plugin can be also be installed via the update manager by
creating a new remote site pointing to
http://geronimo.apache.org/devtools<http://geronimo.apache.org/devtools><http://geronimo.apache.org/devtools>
.

The latest release supports deployment to Geronimo 1.1.x and all previous
versions. See the release
notes<http://people.apache.org/dist/geronimo/eclipse/PLUGIN_RELEASE-NOTES-1.2.0.txt><http://people.apache.org/dist/geronimo/eclipse/PLUGIN_RELEASE-NOTES-1.2.0.txt><http://people.apache.org/dist/geronimo/eclipse/PLUGIN_RELEASE-NOTES-1.2.0.txt>for
additional information.

*J2G Migration Tool 1.0*

The first release of the J2G migration tool can be downloaded from the wiki
page for the tool here(link to
http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/GMOxDOC20/J2G+Migration+Tool).

What are your thoughts?

Re: Adding j2g to site

If we have some working tool that facilitates migrating to Geronimo I think it's definitively worth mentioning on the main web site.
It seems to me that a place somewhere closer to the dev tools subproject would be a better fit.

I see there are two documents on the wiki (for Geronimo 1.1 and 2.0 respectively), you folks would have to work on some shorter version (a couple of paragraphs) describing what this tool does and how so it can be included on the web site.

I don't really know much about this tool entrails so I'll wait on others for some more input. But if there is a tool that help users adopt Geronimo I'm all for it ;-)

Cheers!

Hernan makes a good point, I don't think the wiki is an appropriate place to
provide access to the deployable. I wasn't aware that's what we were
actually doing, but we definitely should move it somewhere else. If anyone
has any ideas where to put it, suggestions are welcome. Also, I'd like to
echo Hernan's question about the process involved in moving something out of
sandbox? I think it might be time to put it out there for review and see if
it's ready to be moved.

As with Jason, I agree. This should probably be moved out of sandbox and
into dev tools at this point, but I am unfamiliar with the process and lack
access if it would just be a simple move that wouldn't require a vote.
Am I correct in guessing the ultimate destination for a binary release of
j2g would be the apache mirror servers as our Geronimo server releases go
to, or would it just reside in perhaps the SVN repository, or maybe a
committer's personal apache web space?

Thanks

+1 on moving J2G out of sandbox and into devtools so we can cut a 1.0 release

I'm not too sure it's a good idea to serve the 3mb plugin from the cwiki. Actually, we should update the J2G wiki pages to point somewhere else for downloading this tool. What that "somewhere else" would be?

rather wait until when/if it gets moved out of sandbox.

Erik, Jason and Viet. This is really good. Since we're making a

Hi Jason, this is done. If you need/want additional changes please let me know.
I really like the way you all have documented the build, installation, and usage
instructions on separate wiki pages. I'll plan to mimic that in the future for
the Eclipse plugin as well. Thanks

Re: Adding j2g to site

Posted by Jason Warner <ja...@gmail.com>.
Tim,

Quick thought. There are pages on the geronimo wiki that contain
installation instructions[1] and usage instructions[2]. Those links could
be placed under the appropriate headings on the "Apache Geronimo Development
Tools Subproject" website. Thoughts?

[1] http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC20/building-j2g-from-source.html

[2] http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC11/using-j2g.html

Thanks Tim. I updated the wiki page to point at :
     http://people.apache.org/dist/geronimo/j2g/nightly/
Assuming that is where your J2G build script uploads the file(?)

Best wishes,
Paul

Thanks Paul, now I don't have to worry about blowing away the one on the
unstable site ;-)

Hi Erik, thanks very for reviewing. Sorry I didn't know that J2G has its own
unstable site. So, I'll change the wiki to point to the j2g/unstable site
instead of the eclipse/unstable site and change my build script to FTP the
latest trunk version to the j2g/unstable site every Sunday morning. That all
work for you ??

Re: Adding j2g to site

Posted by "Erik B. Craig" <gi...@gmail.com>.
Tim,

Sorry for the delay on this, but I just caught an issue on the site...
Under the
"Daily Drivers" for J2G
Unofficial daily drivers are available for download here.
The URL points to the eclipse plugins directory at
http://people.apache.org/dist/geronimo/eclipse/unstable/ rather than the j2g
section at
http://people.apache.org/dist/geronimo/j2g/unstable/.

In addition to this, the version up there for j2g is horribly dated, and not
functional to the best of my knowledge. There is currently one attached to
the wiki that could be uploaded in place, if you have sufficient access to
do so (I am unfamiliar)
http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/download/attachments/62470/j2g-conversion-1.0.0-SNAPSHOT-bin.zip

Thanks

Re: Adding j2g to site

Posted by Tim McConnell <ti...@gmail.com>.
Hi Erik, Jason and Viet, Today I've updated the "Apache Geronimo Development
Tools Subproject" website (below) to include the latest information about the
new release of the Geronimo Eclipse Plugin.

---> http://geronimo.apache.org/development-tools.html

I've also included some information about the J2G Migration tool from some of
the notes in this thread. Since I don't know a lot about this new tool, I'm
hoping you all might review what I have thus far to see if it's kinda what you
all had envisioned. Also, every Sunday I push out the latest trunk build of the
Geronimo Eclipse plugin to our unstable site (below). I've assumed it's okay to
do the same for the J2G plugin as well and have listed it in the downloads
sections.

---> http://people.apache.org/dist/geronimo/eclipse/unstable/

Thanks
