can you attach to parent with gdb and see where it sits/loops/whatever?

gut feel is that this wouldn't happen with pure Apache (no EAPI patches, no mm,
etc.), but I'm evil...  can you try such a build for the non-SSL port?

if it still fails, any way you can run strace on some children until something
bad happens?
(I think I have a script from Greg Ames somewhere to help keep the amount of
strace output under control...  it creates/reads a named pipe and writes the
last n lines to a file when the named pipe is closed...  have strace write to
that pipe)
