how to use "CSV Data Set Config" to take input from file

hi all,

i am trying to test a sign-in(registration) form. hence, i need to use
different data for each submission. i think using "CSV Data Set Config"
would be the easiest route. i need your help to give me a step-by-step
example on "CSV Data Set Config" using. all fields are not mandatory for the
form, is there way to only entering mandatory fields???

please help me out ASAP.

thanks in advance.

RE: how to use "CSV Data Set Config" to take input from file

Posted by Steve Kapinos <St...@tandberg.com>.
You must know and decide which fields to send in a form - that's
completely separate from the CSV reader.

All the CSV data reader is used for is to populate variables with values
from a file. You define what variables are used to hold the values from
your CSV file.

Then you use those variables in your samplers or expressions.

Try getting your login form working first with static values. Once that
works, replace those static values with variables, and add the CSV data
set reader to populate those variables.

just to let you know my pages are https that's why i am using BadBoy to
record. in HTTP Request BadBoy automatically loads all the variable names -
you can see that in attached image. so, seems like i have the variables
added already. any ideas???

RE: how to use "CSV Data Set Config" to take input from file

Posted by Steve Kapinos <St...@tandberg.com>.
There are no attachments on the listserv.

I said http sampler because I assume you are sending the form request
via http. It's the category of sampler, you can label it other things
and maybe badboy set a label.

But the theory is the same.. you should be using the view results tree
to verify what is being sent to the server is what you what. If not,
change your sampler that is sending the data to include the variables
you should be using.

You should read the manual and understand basic test plans
http://jakarta.apache.org/jmeter/usermanual/build-web-test-plan.html

looks like i am missing 'http sampler'. i didn't add any additional

what sampler am i missing??? and how to add variables to http sampler?

the values its showing is in 'view result tree''s response data tab. but
the
request tab is not showing any values. i have attached a screenshot of
'view
results tree's' request tab. (it shows this after adding 'debug
sampler').

thanks Steve.

looks like i am missing 'http sampler'. i didn't add any additional 'http
sampler' after exporting from BadBoy. Please look at the

what sampler am i missing??? and how to add variables to http sampler?

the values its showing is in 'view result tree''s response data tab. but the
request tab is not showing any values. i have attached a screenshot of 'view
results tree's' request tab. (it shows this after adding 'debug sampler').

thanks Steve.

Where? In the debug sampler or the actual http sampler in the request
tab? The request tab for the http sampler is going to show what is sent
to the server.

Debug Sampler = show you what vales each variable has
Http Sampler = show you what was sent and received

You must ensure what you are sending includes the values you want.

than

By putting your variables into your http sampler properly. It sounds
like you have not replaced all the recorded data in your http sampler
with the variables properly.

Re: how to use "CSV Data Set Config" to take input from file

Posted by porobashi <po...@rocketmail.com>.
i found something ...

1. its trying to enter data from the recorded data. so, if i change values
of email addrss(since email address has to be different for each account)
there, it goes into the database.

2. on 'view results tree' its showing its fetching the values correctly from
csv file.

so, my question is how can i make it enter values from csv to DB rather than
what i have recorded. i am attaching few screenshots so that you guys can
what's going on.

if you look at the screenshot 'customerregistration_values' if i change
email address there with one that's not in DB, after running test i can see
that entry is in my DB, not the values from my CSV file.

please give your thougts, so that i can resolve this.

thanks.

Thanks. I added debug sampler. After running test again, now in results tree
its showing me response data, and they look correct. same as CSV file data.

so, what might be the reason its not getting registered(not going into
Database)????

RE: how to use "CSV Data Set Config" to take input from file

Posted by Steve Kapinos <St...@tandberg.com>.
We don't know anything about your application. Debugging what happens
between the client's data and what your server does with it is up to
you.

Compare the results and logs of using a browser session and jmeter.
Look at the server, there may be logging on that side to assist you.

The debug sampler, view results, and response file give you full insight
into what jmeter is sending and receiving.

Thanks. I added debug sampler. After running test again, now in results
tree
its showing me response data, and they look correct. same as CSV file
data.
i attached one screenshot as well.

so, what might be the reason its not getting registered(not going into
Database)????

RE: how to use "CSV Data Set Config" to take input from file

Posted by porobashi <po...@rocketmail.com>.
Thanks. I added debug sampler. After running test again, now in results tree
its showing me response data, and they look correct. same as CSV file data.
i attached one screenshot as well.

so, what might be the reason its not getting registered(not going into
Database)????

RE: how to use "CSV Data Set Config" to take input from file

Posted by Steve Kapinos <St...@tandberg.com>.
Then you probably haven't configured your sampler correctly.

Adding a debug sampler at the stage where your sampler is, and you can
see the state of all variables at that time in the view results from
tree.

If your variables were wrong.. you'd see jmeter send the actual variable
text... like  ${something}

Add the debug sampler, look at your variable values. That will tell you
if the CSV reader is working. If the variables are fine there, but not
in your sampler, the sampler is populated wrong.

Remember that variables are case sensitive.

I think JMeter is not reading data from my csv file. In the request

pages in
BadBoy. Since that record got into database when I was recording, and
its

email
in our account'. So, how to make JMeter read data from my CSV file???

RE: how to use "CSV Data Set Config" to take input from file

Add 'view results tree' listeners so you can watch what the sent data
and response data is to the server.

Then you'll have to debug what your form wants and what its responding
to you.

i recorded web-pages using BadBoy software. then exported to JMeter.
added
CSV File configuration module. entered filename, field names separated
by
commas. tried for 3 users. ran it, no error is Aggregate Report, but i
don't
see any entry in database for the registration.

few days ago, i used BadBoy(to record and then used JMeter) in a similar
way
to test other forms and that worked. previously form data was same for
all
users, so I didn't had to do any other configuration.

any thoughts???

Re: how to use "CSV Data Set Config" to take input from file

Posted by Noel O'Brien <no...@newbay.com>.
The number of concurrent users is controlled by he number of threads you
configure in the Thread Group module.

CVS Data Set Config module will load one line of a CSV file for each thread,
so create a CSV file with at least as many entries as threads.

Then you can add a HTTP Request sampler, specify the protocol as HTTPS and
fill in the rest of the necessary data

Don't forget to add a listener (e.g. View Results Tree) so that you can see
what's going on

Regards,
Noel

I am trying to load test our registration page. I am not limited on users,
but will start with 10-20 users.

I will like to enter only required fields value.

My page is https, I will use BadBoy to record the page. Then I need to add
"CSV Data Set Config" to the thread group, right? How to go from there?

Thanks

What kind of testing (functional, load)?
Are you limited to a set of login data (e.g. 20 users)
