[lucy-dev] problem with clutch related to svn auth?
For those that don't know "The Clutch" is a mechanism for the IPMC (and
the board) to assess the state of all podlings at a glance...
https://incubator.apache.org/clutch.html
Lucy looks pretty good in the clutch, except for an oddity in column "J"
which indicates the total number of committers, and currently lists "-"
Obviously this is a mistake, there are lucy committers, but the automated
tools that generte the report don't realize this. note that Lucy doesn't
evne show up on the "list of projects by committer" page (don't be
confused by the legacy "lucene-lucy" group)...
https://people.apache.org/committers-by-project.html
I suspect the problem here may stem from the decision to open up lucy svn
RW access to all committers because now there is no longer longer a "lucy"
group defined in the asf-authorization-template at all. we probably need
to get hte lucy group added back in just for accounting purposes. (but not
used for any actual auth).
mattman, marvin, do you guys have infra karma to change
asf-authorization-template or do we need a jira for this?

No such animal any more- lucy committers
are ASF committers.

The information can be had from the XML source for our project page, which I
believe the clutch tool is already parsing.

Sure, I agree with this, Hoss. Joe S. -- do you know how we get the
projects.apache.org site to show the Lucy committers? I seem to remember
it having something to do with the doap RDF file and with our FOAF RDF
files, but am not positive there?

not neccessarily ... as i understand it there is a diff between having a
*group* defined, and using htat group to say who can/can't edit a dir.
saying that @committers gets rw access to /lucy is one thing, but that
doesn't explain why the entire @lucy group was deleted. I may be wrong,
but my undertanding is that those groups are the official record of who
the "committers" are, even if the project opens committ access up to more
then just hte committers they vote in.
It's also not just about the clutch ... as i mentioned, the public list of
all committers doesn't even know lucy exists...

If you say so ... at the very least though it seems like this is something
that should be brought up with general@incubator or infra@ to point out
the gap between how the various tools seem to currenty work, and the goal
of getting incubator projects (and more projects in general) to open up
commit access to @committers.
If Lucy is going to lead the way on being open to commits, that involves
the Lucy (P)PMC helping to shape how that affects @incubator and @apache
as a whole.

The Incubator is going to need an alternative to asf-authorization-template
eventually if more projects follow our lead and allow all committers access.
Modding that document is a pain because so few people have the necessary
privileges. If we go back and mod it now, all that does is put off the day
that the Incubator has to solve this problem for real by establishing a better
central repository for this data. We'd also be backsliding on Roy's request
to the Incubator to get everyone in one group and lighten the burden on Infra.
I appreciate the audit from Hoss, but I think we should leave this one alone.

Do we? I think we'll likely be alright, especially in the sense that once we
move out of the Incubator and into a PMC we'll be managed by infra@ LDAP
instead of the asf-authorization-template. Graduation for Lucy is near, so
I'm not sure it's worth putting the karma stuff back in just to get Clutch
to look better. I don't think Gora looked too good in Clutch but we just
recently passed muster at the graduation VOTE within the IPMC, so
Lucy would too especially since I think the only thing that isn't
kosher in Clutch right now is the committers and we have a VOTE thread
on record basically explaining why that is.

I can change the asf-authorization-template if that's what you guys
really want to do (IOW I have the karma as a PMC chair to do so), so
let me know what y'all think and we'll go from there.
Cheers,
Chris
