EJB3 Examples -- wanna help?

All,

We are launching a new initiative to create some really simple and
neat EJB3 examples similar to the excellent examples that Tomcat
ships that show people how to write Servlets and JSPs. With these
examples people will not only be able to use OpenEJB 3 very easily,
but moreover they will be one of the definitive places to learn
EJB3. Period.

We've already received a couple volunteers, but there's more than
enough to go around, so we're sending out the word. If you would
like to help create examples, reply to this email on the dev list and
we'll help you get started!

Here's the current wish-list:

   [OPENEJB-342] EJB 3 Examples
[OPENEJB-343] Example: Minimal Statetless Bean via a deployment
descriptor
[OPENEJB-344] Example: Minimal Stateful Bean via a deployment
descriptor
[OPENEJB-345] Example: Minimal MessageDriven Bean via a
deployment descriptor
[OPENEJB-346] Example: Minimal Statetless Bean via @Stateless
[OPENEJB-347] Example: Minimal Stateful Bean via @Stateful
[OPENEJB-348] Example: Minimal MessageDriven Bean via
@MessageDriven
[OPENEJB-349] Example: Stateless Bean with Legacy Home/Remote
Interfaces
[OPENEJB-350] Example: Stateful Bean with Legacy Home/Remote
Interfaces
[OPENEJB-351] Example: Stateless Bean with Callbacks
[OPENEJB-352] Example: Stateful Bean with Callbacks
[OPENEJB-353] Example: MessageDriven Bean with Callbacks
[OPENEJB-354] Example: @Resource for JNDI Lookups
[OPENEJB-355] Example: @Resource for Field Injection
[OPENEJB-356] Example: @Resource for Setter Injection
[OPENEJB-357] Example: Using @EJB to refer to other EJBs
     [OPENEJB-358] Example: Using JDBC
     [OPENEJB-359] Example: Using JMS
     [OPENEJB-360] Example: Using JPA
     [OPENEJB-361] Example: Bean-Managed Transactions
     [OPENEJB-362] Example: Container-Managed Transactions with
@TrasactionAttribute
[OPENEJB-363] Example: Interceptors for Business Methods
[OPENEJB-364] Example: Interceptors for Lifecycle Callbacks
     [OPENEJB-365] Example: Default Interceptors
     [OPENEJB-366] Example: Method-level Interceptors

   see: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OPENEJB-342

Each example would show how to develop, deploy and test EJB 3
applications. All examples will be heavily javadoced to explain how
they are used and will be accompanied by JUnit test cases that run
them. README.txt files will document the examples overall and detail
what the example demonstrates. Further, all the examples and related
documentation will also be placed in the website.

We will also have a generated index page with each example indexed by
annotation. Clicking on an annotation will bring you to a page
listing the examples that have that annotation.

Come join the fun!

-David

Great suggestion. It's here now and should be published within an
hour http://cwiki.apache.org/OPENEJB/

For those that are interested, this example will compile, deploy and
run in a unit test.

   http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openejb/trunk/openejb3/
examples/helloworld-stateful-pojo/

We basically need a directory like each of the examples. Something
simple and fun. That example even runs with the build so we *know*
it always works. You might think of these as our itests but very
small, user focused, uncluttered and cleanly documented with a heavy
slant at teaching.

Hey Dave,

Excellent idea! I think that we should put it on the website. What do you think?

Hi Filippo,

What an excellent contribution!

This is fantastic and we'd love to have you work on other examples
too both in italian and english.

We do support business interfaces overall, i.e. you can have a bean
with business interfaces and a client can look it up and invoke it
just fine. There are just a couple methods in EJBContext/
SessionContext which we don't support.

We'd love to have documentation for the examples in italian as well
as english. In fact we are i18n enabled so if you wanted to help
translate some resource files into italian, that'd be excellent too!

Correct.

Sure. It will give us enough time to get OpenEJB 3 ready for it. Such
applications are a good chance to verify EJB 3.0 compliancy, so even
though OpenEJB 3 (the product) isn't prepared for it yet, the project
(the community) is.

Just to be sure (I can't find a roadmap for openejb3 in the
website)... it's an ejb3 compliant application, so requires jpa and
full ejb3 support (at least for stateless beans). I don't think it can
run with the current snapshot of openejb since, afaik, it does not
support business interfaces (OPENEJB-90)

Ok, give me just a couple of weeks... the application is mainly in
italian (class names, variable names, ..) so it need to be refactored
a bit..

Hi,

Are you asking us whether we're interested?! We are certainly
interested in contributions like that! <quote
author="Dave">Period</quote>.

You don't even have to make it M2-enabled, if it's not yet. It'd be an
excellent piece of code to work on by others who are still unsure how
to contribute.

Could you please create a package of the sample (jar, zip, tgz,
whatever) and rise an jira issue with the package as attachement?
While doing it, please select "Grant license to ASF for inclusion in
ASF works (as per the Apache Software License §5)" and remove any
license headers from the files. We'll get your name listed in NOTICE,
I believe, so you'll get a credit for the work.

Thanks!

Hi, I have recently published a book (in italian) which covers the basics of
Java EE 5 and ejb3, so I would be happy to contribute with some examples...
moreover, I have built for the same book a sample application (a minimal
wiki) which uses session stateless and entities.
The application is really simple (the presentation part is *minimal*, to say
the least), but if you are interested, I could donate it (it needs just a
few refactorings and some bug fixings).
