Tomcat Automatically STOPS

I've installed Tomcat 3.1, with 3 virtual hosts.

Tomcat stops suddenly very often. Then I noticed, it has created so many instances. 

When I typed ps -A | grep java | wc, it shows 48 instances.

Can anyone help me out?
