Where does James stand with IMAP?
Is IMAP available in James? Is there any active work on this subject?
Can you point me to more information?

No, and not at this time. The server-dev list archives would have
information. We have a pretty decent IMAP handler, but the gating factor is
redoing the message archives to support hierarchy, and then adding other
IMAP operations.
