[We want to hear from you] Problem/Pain area in implementing MINA based application??

As we move towards defining road map for for MINA 3.0 release, wanted
to collect inputs from users.

We want to know what are the problem/pain areas, that you as MINA
users, faced while implementation.

To put it simply, what can we have in MINA in
implementation/architecture or whatever that could have made using
MINA easier and better.

Your inputs shall be helpful in defining the 3.0 road map.

For ex. Having some standard codec's would have helped

I also missed multicast support, however I quickly cobbled together
DatagramAcceptor and DatagramConnector using the APR transport
functionalities. It seems to work so far, as I have implemented an SLP
service on top of my APR classes, however i am sure there are still
heaps of bugs in there.
The main problem is that the tomcat native library on which the apr
transport package in MINA relies is broken (typos). I also had to fix
them. The tomcat native guys are aware of the bugs and they should be
fixed in the upcoming release.

I will of course release the code as soon as I can , but as I am
currently working on my MSc project, I will have to fill in some forms
and probably won't be allowed to release anything until the thesis has
been handed in.

My deadline is April 12... ;)

cheers,
Lorenz

This was a suggestion I made : having a special version NIO 2 based (ie,
Java 7 only). That will be a kind of fork. Maybe we can also have some
common parts between the Java 5 MINA and the Java 7 MINA.

Don't know exactly how to handle that atm...

Last time I looked Mina still didn't have first class support for multicast
owing to a dependency on multicast nio in JDK 7.

Working around this problem is possible via broadcast UDP but clearly that's
not as network-friendly thus I'd request consideration for implementing full
multicast support.

Thanks,

Dan.

Summary

These were some of the things reported as part of this thread, other
than already discussed

[Dan Creswell, Lorenz Breu] - Implementing full multicast support.
[Alexander Christian] - updated javadoc

Adding my wish list

[Ashish] - More examples and possibly details on how to Unit Test &
Benchmark MINA applications

Have came across japex (https://japex.dev.java.net/) while browsing
through grizzly. Its used to write Micro-benchmark.
Will give it a try after vacations.

thanks

That's something we have to generate. I don't know why it has not been
created, as it is supposed to be part of the packaging system, but as we
currently have a problem with the maven assembly plugin, I guess this is
the reason it's not existing. (FYI, I had to modify the packages by hand
...)

May be we have something missing in the packaging system, too...

Hi,

just one "small" thing I faced while updating from 2.0.0M3 to 2.0.0M4:

In M3, there was a file "mina-core-2.0.0M3-sources.jar".

In M4, such file is missing. It would be great to have such file again, or
have two core files: one with classes only, and one with classes+sources,
so that dev's don't have to link their IDE to the sources to get all
javadoc etc. And later, in release version, just exchange the file with the
classes-only-jar.

Beside that: Except missing javadoc at many places, I had no deeper
problems with MINA. Great library ...

Alex

It's not a bug. It's a feature!
