This is already (mostly) possible:
Enter the formula markup, select it, menu: Insert > Object > Formula. The
selected markup is converted to the embedded formula object without starting
the OOMath UI.

A menu shortcut allows this to be done from the keyboard. For the English
menus: Alt+iof

It would be nice if this could be assigned to a direct shortcut key/combo.
