Mystery solved. I added the following to my ~/.gitignore_global so long ago I didn't remember it.

.DS_Store
*.iml

I use "./gradlew idea" all the time... .but then let IntelliJ import the gradle build, I think because importing the ant project gave me grief at one point. IOW, for no good reason.

I don't see any reason _not_ to add this patch. I was tempted to say use 
{code}*.iml{code} rather than {code}/*.iml{code}, but since we have them as part of the "ant idea" task in dev-tools, that would be a mistake.
