Thanks Stefan, I have to 'fess up: I had a poke around after I posted and found I could unfold the attribute list this way. It's a little messy but it works so I can use DS. I was intending to post back but you beat me to it.

I think there is a workaround: Please enable the option "Show operational attributes" in the entry editor preferences: http://directory.apache.org/studio/static/users_guide/ldap_browser/preferences_entry_editor.html

Ok, thanks Jim for the update. I will test it with the attribute list at the bottom.
Let me just anwer your two other funnies:
1. This is a known problem in Studio, see http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DIRSTUDIO-184. We have to investigate on that.
2. When browsing the DIT, Studio uses a client-side limit. This limit is defined in the connection properties. See
http://directory.apache.org/studio/static/users_guide/ldap_browser/tools_connection_properties.html#tools_connection_properties_options how to change it. I also added this question to the FAQ: http://directory.apache.org/studio/faqs.html

I think I have the clue.
I've had a look at other rolled up attributes around the directory. Some expanded, some didn't. Probably rules out OS and Java. I haven't got another handy directory to test.
None of the (ou=user) MemberOf attribute lists would expand.
Everything else did...UNTIL I found a rolled up attribute at the BOTTOM of the attribute list. Checked out more. Same, roll ups in the last position wouldn't expand. I'd say that's it. At a high probability :-)
BTW I have two other funnies, I don't think these would affect attribute-level issues, but just in case:
1. I get an error dialog saying "Reading Children / Error while reading entry / Unprocessed Continuation Reference(s)" on first browsing the tree. I've found references to this but not in DirStudio, eg [http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/CROWD/2.2.2+Configuring+an+LDAP+Directory+Connector] saying that a java.naming.referral option is required. I can't see how to set this in DirStudio.
2. The directory is a big corporate AD, guess, 10k users, 2K groups (!). DirStudio only browses the first 1000 entries at any node but more can be found using searches. I can't find how to bump this limit, so my browse is typically not complete.

This is a very strange behaviour. I wasn't able to reproduce, could you please answer some more questions and test some things?
- Have you tried another Java version than 1.6 or another OS?
- Does this problem occur on every entry of your directory?
- Does this problem occur on other directories?
- I see that the "Quick Filter " of the entry editor is activated, could you please try to close this filter?
- Is ther any change after "refreshing" the entry?

This problem is a showstopper (for me), it makes dirstudio about unusable. I notice it hasn't been fixed in the RC 1.1 20080303. I'd love to see it, or some kind of workaround....
