So I see. Thank you.
TVD> Second, what's the appropriate way to deprecate rules? I think
TVD> this will require more thought and discussion.
Yes.
I've been able to deprecate an entire rules file by reducing that file
to just comments, and no rules, but then I don't have to worry about
the bandwidth of systems pulling in that now-empty file time after
time after time.
Chris Santerre has had less luck, and has had to become nasty to some
systems to get them to stop pulling in obsolete files.
Deprecating single rules is even trickier. It's not too big a problem
within SA when we deprecate a rule at a major version change, since
people expect to have to tweak things then. But in SARE I find it
useful to archive rules on a regular basis as they lose strength due
to changing spam characteristics.

I sent the mail before I was done... I can reproduce this, via:
perl -we 'if (my $t=0) {}'
on 5.8.0, and 5.6.0 as well. So perhaps it's not as simple as a perl
version issue.

It could very well be something perl-version related. My FC machine is 5.8.5,
OSX is 5.8.6. I can reproduce it on 5.8.3.

Well, I think there are two issues here.
First, the "meta TEST 0" construct ought to work, and there's an easy enough
change to make it work. I opened a ticket about it:
http://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=4698
Second, what's the appropriate way to deprecate rules? I think this will
require more thought and discussion.

Strange, then, that many others haven't reported the problem before.
I've been using this construct since February.

Good enough explanation, though it doesn't explain why others who use
the rules don't get the error.
So we're back to the discussion had in January/February about the best
way to avoid --lint errors when SARE rules are removed from *.cf
files, but people have score lines for those rules.
The goal is to not any any significant time, which means not adding
any basic rules. I'm thinking that the best structure might be
something like:
meta SARE_OBFU_OBLIGATION TO_EMPTY && !TO_EMPTY
which will always test false. Is there a better way to accomplish
this?

Really? I can reproduce this by putting in the single line:

fails on my FC3 Linux machine and my OSX machine.

meta statements aren't the same as if/then constructs? ;)
The problem is that in the code, the rule gets turned into:
if (my $result = 0 ) { $self->got_hit (q#SARE_OBFU_OBLIGATION#, "", $result); }
because the result is needed for further processing. Normal rules look like:
if (my $result = ( $self->{'tests_already_hit'}->{'__HTML_LENGTH_384'} &&
$self->{'tests_already_hit'}->{'__TAG_EXISTS_CENTER'} ) ) { $self->got_hit
(q#HTML_SHORT_CENTER#, "", $result); }

It only happens on SARE rules, and only on specific SARE files.
Nobody within SARE can reproduce it.
Richard was able to boil the problem down to:
> after some iterative hunt-n-pecking thru SARE_OBFU, i find that if
he runs --lint against:
> meta SARE_OBFU_OBLIGATION 0

> and NOTHING MORE, i get the warnings (one per line above ...)
This is a structure I adopted a few months ago for the purpose of
removing rules without causing --lint errors when people had their own
score overrides or meta rules referring to rules being deleted.
The initial problem: If I remove a rule for which there's a score
override, then --lint reports an unmatched score line, and RDJ will
not load any updates for that system.
The initial fix: As discussed (I forget whether here or on the users'
list), the above "meta rulename 0" structure was adopted to say "this
rule exists, it always fails to match."
This structure has worked well, until now. It fails as far as I know
only on Richard's
O> i'm building SA r345765 on OSX 10.4.3 w/ gcc401 & perl 587.
I cannot see any reason for these to fail on his system. Can anyone
else find an explanation?
Is this a structure that should work? If so, I'll create a bugzilla
entry for it. If not, then I'll find an alternative.
Thanks.

Since you can create the problem when you enable certain third-party
rules, I'd say its a rule issue. If the author(s) think it's a code issue,
they can open a ticket. :)

hi,
well, after a bit of iteration, the culprits are:
"SARE_HTML" & "SARE_OBFU"
if
RDJ --> TRUSTED_RULESETS="TRIPWIRE SARE_REDIRECT_POST300 SARE_EVILNUMBERS0 SARE_EVILNUMBERS1
SARE_BAYES_POISON_NXM SARE_HEADER_ENG SARE_SPECIFIC SARE_ADULT SARE_BML SARE_FRAUD SARE_SPOOF
SARE_RANDOM SARE_SPAMCOP_TOP200 SARE_OEM SARE_GENLSUBJ_ENG SARE_UNSUB SARE_URI_ENG BOGUSVIRUS
ANTIDRUG"
after:
/usr/bin/env LANG=en_US LC_ALL=en_US
RDJ_CONFIGFILE=/var/rc6MailServer/Conf/SA/rules_du_jour.conf /bin/sh
/var/MailServer/Build/Scripts/rules_du_jour
then,
spamassassin --lint \
- --debug \
- --siteconfigpath=/var/MailServer/Conf/SA/Dist \
- --configpath=/var/rc6MailServer/Conf/SA/Local \
- --prefs-file=local.cf \
- --nocreate-prefs
results in NO WARNINGS.
if, however,
RDJ --> TRUSTED_RULESETS="SARE_HTML"
then, "$SA --lint --debug ..." outputs: http://paste.lisp.org/display/13818
and, if
RDJ --> TRUSTED_RULESETS="SARE_OBFU"
then, "$SA --lint --debug ..." outputs: http://paste.lisp.org/display/13819
so, is this a RULE prob, or an SA issue?
cheers,
richard

ah. good question.
none of "my own" custom rules, but a number of RDJ-DL'd rules. in my particular case, from
rules_du_jour.conf:
TRUSTED_RULESETS="TRIPWIRE SARE_REDIRECT_POST300 SARE_EVILNUMBERS0 SARE_EVILNUMBERS1
SARE_BAYES_POISON_NXM SARE_HTML SARE_HEADER_ENG SARE_SPECIFIC SARE_ADULT SARE_BML SARE_FRAUD
SARE_SPOOF SARE_RANDOM SARE_SPAMCOP_TOP200 SARE_OEM SARE_GENLSUBJ_ENG SARE_UNSUB SARE_URI_ENG
SARE_OBFU BOGUSVIRUS ANTIDRUG"
