[users@httpd] SSI's and images not appearing

hi everyone,

this is a very tricky problem to search for in the archives...

whenever my index page is loaded from the root domain, my SSI's do not work.  
they do, however, when the page is loaded from the exact URL.

also, i'm having a problem with the 1st image loaded on the index page.  about 
75% of the time, the first img from the html, does not load.  doesn't matter 
which image either.  the server is running off a 144kbps DSL circuit.  is this a 
bandwidth issue?

DirectoryIndex index.html index.html.var index.htm index.shtml index.cgi 
index.php 

</snip>

(index.html is the only index page in my sites directory.
