Seeking for Open Office help

Hello,

I have a MacBook Pro and I am using OpenOffice. I am having trouble when I save it as a file type in order for a windows user to open it. Once I send it as an attachment in an email the document icon appears in blank instead of having an icon of a power point or excel, any ideas what I can do to solve that ?
